Valheim Ashlands: Dedicated Server Setup and Performance Guide

Published on

How the Ashlands biome affects Valheim dedicated servers. Covers RAM increases, world generation, mod compatibility, and server settings for the volcanic endgame biome.

The Ashlands update turned Valheim's southern continent into a volcanic biome with new enemies, resources, siege mechanics, and the most demanding server-side content the game has seen. Here is what changed for dedicated server operators and how to handle it.

What Ashlands Does to Server Performance

Ashlands introduced several things that hit the server harder than any previous biome:

Lava and terrain effects: the Ashlands biome renders active lava flows and dynamic particle effects. While most of this is client-side rendering, the terrain state and destructible structures in the biome add to the world save complexity. Save files for worlds with explored Ashlands are noticeably larger.

Siege mechanics: the Ashlands has fortress sieges where players assault enemy strongholds with catapults and other siege equipment. The physics simulation for projectiles and destructible walls runs server-side. A group of players actively sieging a fortress creates a temporary CPU spike.

More aggressive enemy spawning: Ashlands enemies spawn in larger groups than previous biomes and some have ranged attacks that create additional projectile tracking on the server. Peak load in the Ashlands is higher than peak load in the Mistlands or Plains.

Flametal smelting and crafting: the new crafting tier adds more item types to the game's data model. Minor impact individually, but it adds up in worlds with many players crafting simultaneously.

RAM Recommendations

Ashlands pushed the RAM recommendations up across the board:

Player countPre-AshlandsWith Ashlands active
1-3 players2-3 GB3-4 GB
4-6 players3-4 GB4-6 GB
7-10 players4-6 GB6-8 GB

"With Ashlands active" means players are in the biome, exploring, fighting, and building. If your group is still in the Meadows or Black Forest, the impact is minimal because Ashlands terrain only loads into memory when someone is there.

World Generation

Ashlands content generates in the southern part of the map. In existing worlds, it fills in previously unexplored southern terrain. Terrain that players already explored keeps its old generation (empty ocean or sparse land).

This means:

  • Existing worlds work. No wipe needed. New content appears where nobody has been yet.
  • Players who already explored the south may have a mix of old terrain and new Ashlands content at the boundary. This is cosmetically rough but functionally fine.
  • Fresh worlds get the best Ashlands experience because the biome generates cleanly across the entire south.

Some communities run a fresh world specifically for Ashlands, either replacing the old one or running a second server instance.

Server Settings for Ashlands

Valheim's dedicated server does not have biome-specific settings. The world modifier system affects the entire world:

Combat modifier: adjusts enemy damage and health globally. If your group finds Ashlands too punishing, lowering combat difficulty affects all biomes, not just Ashlands. There is no way to make Ashlands easier while keeping other biomes at default difficulty.

Death penalty: determines what players lose on death. In a biome with frequent deaths, a reduced death penalty prevents frustration spirals where players die, lose skills, die again more easily, and spiral.

Portal restrictions: Ashlands introduces Flametal, which is heavy. Some servers lift the portal metal restriction so players can teleport metal back from the Ashlands. Others keep the restriction for the intended progression experience. Both are valid depending on your community.

World modifiers at server start: these are set at world creation time, not in a config file. To change them on an existing world, use console commands. The setkey command with the appropriate modifier key lets you adjust mid-run.

Mod Compatibility

Ashlands broke several popular mods on release. The pattern:

  • BepInEx itself updated within a few days.
  • Valheim Plus took about a week for an Ashlands-compatible release.
  • Custom item and recipe mods that referenced internal item IDs broke when new items changed the ID mapping.
  • Map mods needed updates to render the new biome correctly.

By now, most actively maintained mods have Ashlands support. But if you are running an older mod that has not updated since early 2026, test it in a staging world before deploying.

When updating the server for Ashlands compatibility, update BepInEx first, then update mods one at a time, testing between each. Mass-updating everything at once makes it impossible to identify which mod is causing a problem when the server fails to start.

Backup Strategy

Ashlands exploration is risky. Players die, worlds grow, and save files get larger. Your backup strategy should account for:

  • More frequent backups during active Ashlands play sessions. A corrupted save during a siege can lose hours of progress.
  • Larger save files. If your backup system has a size limit or storage cap, check that Ashlands-era saves still fit.
  • Quick restores. Players who lose progress to a server crash or save corruption are more frustrated in Ashlands because the content is harder to re-clear. Being able to restore from a 30-minute-old backup rather than a 24-hour-old one matters.

FAQ

Do I need to update my server for Ashlands? Yes. The Ashlands content is part of a game update. Server and client versions must match. Update the server via SteamCMD before your players update their game clients.

Can I prevent players from entering the Ashlands? Not with vanilla server settings. You would need a mod that restricts player movement to certain biomes. Most servers just let players explore when they feel ready.

Does Ashlands affect the server even if nobody is in the biome? Minimally. The biome only loads into active memory when a player is near it. An idle server with all players in the Meadows will not see the Ashlands RAM impact.

My server crashes when players enter Ashlands. What do I check? RAM first. Ashlands loads a significant amount of terrain and entity data when a player first enters the biome. If the server is near its memory limit, this spike can trigger an OOM kill. Check system logs for OOM messages. If confirmed, upgrade RAM.
