Comfort decides how long your Rested buff lasts in Valheim: 7 minutes plus 1 minute per comfort level, so the normal maximum of 22 comfort gives you 29 minutes, and 24 with the seasonal Maypole and Yule Tree gives 31. You raise comfort by placing one item from each furniture group within 10 metres of where you rest, because a second item from the same group adds nothing.
Valheim 1.0 added nine pieces of furniture, seven of which give comfort, plus a Snow Lantern that does too. None of them raises the cap of 22, but they give a Deep North base its own throne, table, carpet and lantern. The numbers below come from the fan-run Valheim Wiki's comfort page, checked on 25 October 2026 against Iron Gate's 1.0 patch notes.
How Resting and Rested Work
There are two separate effects. Resting is what you get while you sit by a fire, or while you are sheltered within reach of a fire, with no enemies around. Hold it for 20 seconds without interruption and you get Rested, the buff you carry out of the house (Resting).
Resting fails in four common situations:
- You are not sheltered. Shelter needs a roof over you and 80% cover around you (Shelter). Without it, sitting by a fire still works, but every other comfort source is ignored and your comfort stays at 1.
- You are Wet. Being wet blocks resting, unless you sit in a heated Hot Tub, the one place where you can rest while wet.
- You are Burning, Freezing or Poisoned.
- An enemy comes close, the fire goes out, or the hall is so large that the fire's radius does not reach you.
Rested gives 50% faster health regeneration and 50% more skill experience, and it speeds up stamina and eitr regeneration (the wiki's effect tables list +100% for both). It lasts 7 minutes plus your comfort level in minutes, and it is removed when you log out (Rested). That last point matters on a dedicated server: everyone who joins tonight starts without it, so the comfort room should be the first stop after the portal.
Comfort Levels You Can Reach in Each Biome
Sitting by a fire in the open gives comfort 1, and nothing else counts. Under a roof near a fire you start at 2, the fire adds 1 (a Hearth adds 2), and furniture adds the rest. Each biome unlocks more of it:
| Biome | Max comfort | Rested time | What gets you there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meadows | 5 | 12 min | Campfire, Bed, Deer Rug |
| Black Forest | 13 | 20 min | Bearskin Rug, Chair, Table, a banner, Fey Lights or Flower Garland, an Armor or Item Stand, Barber Station |
| Swamp | 15 | 22 min | Hearth, Raven Throne |
| Mountains | 17 | 24 min | Dragon Bed, Red Jute Curtain |
| Plains | 19 | 26 min | Round Table or Long Heavy Table, Hot Tub |
| Mistlands | 20 | 27 min | Dvergr Wall Lantern or Dvergr Lantern Pole |
| Ashlands | 22 | 29 min | Lava Lantern, a green pot or Asksvin Skeleton |
| Deep North | 22 | 29 min | Same total, with Deep North alternatives |
Each row builds on the one above it, and the table leaves out the seasonal items. The Maypole and the Yule Tree add 1 each on top, because they belong to no group. You can only build them during the summer and Yule events, and a Maypole occasionally spawns in the Meadows (Comfort).
Every Comfort Item by Group
Only the highest item of each group counts. The wiki lists these groups:
| Group | Comfort 1 | Comfort 2 | Comfort 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire (only while lit) | Campfire, Iron Fire Pit, Bonfire, Hanging Brazier, Standing Brazier, Blue Standing Brazier | Hearth | |
| Bed | Bed, Ashwood Bed | Dragon Bed | |
| Seat | Bench, Sitting Log, Stool, Black Marble Bench, Ashwood Bench, Carved Bench | Chair, Darkwood Chair, Carved Chair | Raven Throne, Stone Throne, Black Marble Throne, Bone Throne, Antler Throne |
| Table | Table, Black Marble Table, Square Carved Table | Round Table, Long Heavy Table, Long Carved Table | |
| Rug | Deer Rug, Hare Rug, Asksvin Rug, Straw, Red and Blue Jute Carpet, Sealskin Rug | Bearskin Rug, Wolf Rug, Lox Rug, Moose Hide Carpet | |
| Banner | Any of the 11 banners | Red Jute Curtain, Blue Jute Curtain, Blue Jute Drapes | |
| Plant | Fey Lights, Flower Garland (Mistletoe and the Yule decorations in season) | ||
| Stand | Armor Stand, Item Stand (it does not need to hold anything) | ||
| Bathroom | Barber Station | Hot Tub (only while heated) | |
| Light | Dvergr Wall Lantern, Dvergr Lantern Pole | Lava Lantern, Snow Lantern, Jack-o-Turnip (Halloween) | |
| Ashlands | Asksvin Skeleton, small, medium or large green pot | ||
| No group | Maypole, Yule Tree (seasonal, they stack) |
The 1.0 furniture is in bold. Jute curtains and drapes share the banner group, so a curtain replaces your banner instead of adding to it.
The 1.0 Furniture and What It Costs
| Item | Comfort | Materials | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Antler Throne | 3 | 15 Timberwood, 1 Moose Trophy, 5 Moose Hide | Same comfort as the older thrones |
| Carved Chair | 2 | 4 Timberwood (all the wiki lists so far) | Same comfort as a Chair |
| Carved Bench | 1 | 6 Timberwood, 6 Moose Hide | |
| Long Carved Table | 2 | 20 Timberwood, 2 Tar, 20 Iron Nails | Same comfort as a Round Table |
| Square Carved Table | 1 | 6 Timberwood, 1 Tar, 6 Iron Nails | Not damaged by rain |
| Moose Hide Carpet | 2 | 4 Moose Hide | Same comfort as a Bearskin Rug |
| Sealskin Rug | 1 | 4 Seal Pelt | |
| Snow Lantern | 2 | 8 Snowballs | Burns Resin, melts outside the Mountains and Deep North |
| Wardrobe | none | 10 Timberwood, 2 Tar, 6 Black Metal | 50 storage slots |
Sources: Chairs, Tables, Rugs, Snow Lantern, Wardrobe. The Carved Chair has no page or full recipe on the wiki yet; its Timberwood page lists 4 Timberwood for it. The Grausten Chest and the Hooded Lantern from the same patch give no comfort either.
The Snow Lantern needs care. Outside the Mountains and the Deep North it loses a quarter of its durability every time the game updates structure wear, so it breaks after four updates. It starts with 2 Resin, holds up to 6, and each unit burns for 20,000 seconds (Snow Lantern). In a Meadows base, keep your Lava Lantern.
Moose Hide is the material that ties this together: the throne, the bench and the carpet all need it, and the Antler Throne also takes a Moose Trophy. Moose live in the Deep North, and since 1.0 you can tame and ride them.
Building a 22 Comfort Room
This is the full list for 22, in a room where you are sheltered:
- Hearth (2). It only counts 2 when you are sheltered and within 8 metres of it (Hearth).
- Dragon Bed (2).
- Bearskin Rug, Wolf Rug, Lox Rug or Moose Hide Carpet (2).
- Red Jute Curtain, Blue Jute Curtain or Blue Jute Drapes (2).
- Any throne (3). The Antler Throne is the Deep North option.
- Round Table, Long Heavy Table or Long Carved Table (2).
- Fey Lights or a Flower Garland (1).
- An Armor Stand or Item Stand (1).
- A heated Hot Tub (2). It burns Wood as fuel (Hot Tub).
- Lava Lantern, or a Snow Lantern if the base is in the Mountains or Deep North (2).
- One green pot or an Asksvin Skeleton (1).
With the 2 for being sheltered near a fire, that adds up to 22. Everything has to sit within 10 metres of you. The game measures from the centre of most items, but from the base of a bed, Dragon Bed or Hearth, from the top of a Hanging Brazier and from near the chimney of a Hot Tub, so put those a little closer than you think.
Watch three things. The Hearth goes out in strong wind when its spot has less than 70% cover, and it stops in rain without a roof. The Hot Tub only counts while it is lit. And in an Ashlands base, a heated Hot Tub will eventually kill you if you stay in it, like all Ashlands water.
Valheim 1.0 also added achievements, and one of them, Comfort is King, asks for a comfort level of 20 (Achievements). You can reach 20 once you have a Dvergr lantern from the Mistlands. Patch 1.0.16 fixed a case where it did not unlock (1.0.16 notes).
Comfort Away From Home
You do not need a house to get Rested. Sitting by a campfire in the open gives comfort 1 and 8 minutes of Rested. Building a campfire in the entrance of most dungeons, such as Burial Chambers, gives comfort 3 and 10 minutes, because the dungeon counts as shelter. A small outpost with a roof, a campfire and a bed gets you to 4, and a rug takes it to 5.
Rested pairs with food: food sets how much health and stamina you have, Rested how fast they come back. Our food and feasts guide covers the food side, and our armour sets guide lists which pieces keep you from Freezing, which blocks resting in the Mountains and the Deep North.
One Comfort Room for the Whole Group
On a shared world, one room at the portal hub does the job for everyone, since every player gets their own Rested buff from the same furniture. Our Valheim server hosting keeps that world online between sessions, starting at €6.40 a month for 4 GB and 2 to 4 players, or from €8.30 for 6 GB and a group of up to 10. Every plan has DDoS protection, NVMe storage and 2 or 3 backup slots in the panel, so you can make a backup before you rebuild the hall.
If you are still working through the biomes, our progression guide shows when each of these materials becomes available.
FAQ
What is the max comfort level in Valheim? 22 with normal furniture, which gives a 29 minute Rested buff. With the seasonal Maypole and Yule Tree on top it is 24, for 31 minutes.
How long does Rested last in Valheim? 7 minutes plus 1 minute per comfort level. Comfort 1, sitting by a campfire outside, gives 8 minutes; comfort 22 gives 29 minutes.
Do two chairs or two rugs add up? No. Only the highest item of each group counts, so two thrones give 3, not 6. Items without a group, the Maypole and the Yule Tree, are the only ones that stack.
Did Valheim 1.0 raise the comfort cap? No. The 1.0 furniture gives the same comfort as older items in the same groups: the Antler Throne 3, the Carved Chair, Long Carved Table and Moose Hide Carpet 2, and the Carved Bench, Square Carved Table and Sealskin Rug 1. The Snow Lantern gives 2 but only lasts in the Mountains and the Deep North.
Does the Wardrobe give comfort? No. The wiki lists no comfort for the Wardrobe, the Grausten Chest or the Hooded Lantern.
Why am I not getting Rested? Usually because you are neither sheltered (a roof and 80% cover) nor sitting by the fire, you are wet, an enemy is nearby, or the fire is out or out of reach. You need 20 seconds of uninterrupted Resting before Rested starts.
