What is the difference between BungeeCord, Waterfall, and Velocity?

BungeeCord is the original Minecraft proxy, created by md_5. Waterfall is a BungeeCord fork with performance improvements. Velocity is a modern, ground-up rewrite that is significantly faster and more secure than BungeeCord - it is the current community recommendation for new networks. All three are supported with one-click installation on Space-Node.

How many servers do I need to run a BungeeCord network?

Accepted Answer

You need at least two servers: one proxy server (BungeeCord or Velocity - needs minimal RAM, 1-2GB is fine) and one or more backend servers (Paper, Spigot, etc.). A typical small network has: 1 proxy + 1 hub + 2-3 game servers. All of these can be separate Space-Node instances on the same node for zero internal latency.

Can I run all my network servers on the same Space-Node node?

Accepted Answer

Yes. If you order multiple plans, you can request all of them on the same physical node. This means internal server-to-server communication happens at near-zero latency. Just contact our support team after ordering and we will provision all instances on the same machine.

What RAM does a BungeeCord or Velocity proxy server need?

Accepted Answer

A BungeeCord or Velocity proxy is very lightweight. 1-2GB RAM is sufficient for networks up to 500 concurrent players. The proxy itself does not run game logic - it just routes connections between your backend servers. Our 3GB MC Coal plan is overkill for the proxy itself, but gives you headroom.

Is Velocity more secure than BungeeCord?

Yes. Velocity uses a modern forwarding system that is resistant to IP spoofing attacks that have historically affected BungeeCord networks. If you are building a new network, Velocity is strongly recommended. For Velocity, you need Paper or a compatible backend (like Purpur) with the Velocity forwarding mode enabled in paper-global.yml.

Can I use a custom domain for my network IP?

Yes. Every Space-Node server includes a free .mymcserver.nl subdomain. For a custom domain (e.g., play.yourserver.com), you simply create an SRV DNS record pointing to your Space-Node server IP. Our support team can walk you through the setup if needed.

What plugins are recommended for a BungeeCord or Velocity network?

For Velocity networks: LuckPerms (permissions across all servers), LimboAPI (lobby/queue server), ViaVersion (cross-version player support), Plan (player analytics), and DiscordSRV (Discord integration). For BungeeCord: BungeeTabListPlus, BungeePerms, and ChatControl. Our support team has experience configuring all of these.

Can I add more backend servers to my network later?

Yes. Adding a new backend server is as simple as ordering a new Space-Node plan and adding it to your proxy config. You do not need to take the network offline to add a new game server. Just add the server to your velocity.toml or config.yml and do a proxy reload.
