Yes. Build 42 went stable on July 29, 2026, and our Project Zomboid servers run the current branch. If you are updating an existing world, back up your save first since Build 42 changed the map format and adds new systems like animal husbandry and expanded basements.

How do I add Workshop mods to my server?

Accepted Answer

Open the panel, add your Workshop mod IDs and their matching Mod IDs to the server configuration, and restart. Mods download automatically. Check each mod's page for Build 42 compatibility before adding it, since mods built for older builds are not guaranteed to load without an update from their author.

How much RAM does a Project Zomboid server need?

Accepted Answer

A small vanilla or lightly-modded server for a handful of survivors runs comfortably on 4GB. A real Workshop mod list and a bigger group is more comfortable on 6GB, and heavy modpacks or larger player counts benefit from 8GB.

Can I run a modded server with custom loot and zombie settings?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Full sandbox configuration is available through the panel: zombie population and speed, loot rarity, XP multipliers, and every other setting Project Zomboid exposes.

Accepted Answer

Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Canada, USA (California), USA (Virginia), Singapore, India, and Australia. Pick the region closest to most of your survivors, and check the live latency preview before you order.

Yes, on every Project Zomboid plan at no extra cost.

Why do players get "File doesn't exist on the client"?

Accepted Answer

The server is running a mod the joining player does not have, or the Workshop IDs and Mod IDs in your config do not match up. Both WorkshopItems and Mods have to list the same content, in the same order, and every player needs to have subscribed to the collection.

How much RAM does a Project Zomboid server need?

Accepted Answer

Zomboid memory use grows with explored map area rather than with player count alone. Four players on a fresh map are fine on 4GB. A long running server where the group has explored several towns is far more comfortable on 8GB, because loaded cells stay in memory.

Does Project Zomboid support crossplay between Steam and other stores?

Accepted Answer

Multiplayer runs through Steam, so all players need the Steam version. There is no console or Game Pass crossplay for dedicated servers.

What happens to my save when Build 42 updates?

Accepted Answer

Major build updates frequently break existing saves and mods. Take a copy of your Zomboid/Saves folder before any major version change, and expect mods to need updating separately. Point releases within a build are usually safe.

Why does my server lag when players split up?

Accepted Answer

Every player loads their own cells, so a group spread across four towns has four times as much of the map in memory and being simulated. This is the most common cause of a server that runs fine one evening and badly the next, with no config change in between.

Can I run a server without mods first and add them later?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and it is the sensible order. Get vanilla running and confirm everyone can join, then add mods one collection at a time. Adding twenty mods before the first successful join makes it very hard to work out which one broke it.
