Every game server hosting provider says the same things on their landing page. Fast hardware, low latency, instant setup, great support. After reading five provider websites, you know nothing you did not know before.
This guide skips the marketing and focuses on what you should actually evaluate before spending money.
The Three Things That Matter Most
1. CPU Architecture and Clock Speed
Game servers are single-threaded or lightly multi-threaded workloads. The physics simulation, game logic, and player synchronization typically run on one core. A CPU with high single-thread performance gives you better tick rates and lower latency than a CPU with many slow cores.
In 2026, the CPUs you want to see from a game hosting provider:
- AMD Ryzen 9000 series (9950X, 9900X): the current performance leaders for single-thread workloads. DDR5 memory.
- AMD Ryzen 7000 series (7950X, 7900X): previous generation, still excellent. DDR5.
- AMD Ryzen 5000 series (5950X, 5900X): older but capable. DDR4.
- Intel 13th/14th gen (i9-13900K, i9-14900K): competitive single-thread performance. DDR5.
What to avoid: Xeon E-series, older Epyc chips, or anything where the provider does not specify the CPU model. "Intel Xeon" or "enterprise-grade hardware" without a specific model is usually a sign of older, lower-clock hardware.
For most games, the practical difference between a Ryzen 9 5900X and a 9950X is noticeable but not dramatic. Both are fast enough. The difference between either of those and an old Xeon is significant.
2. Storage Type
NVMe SSD should be the baseline. World saves, mod files, and server binaries all benefit from fast random read/write performance. The difference shows up in:
- Server start time (loading world data)
- Save operations (world saves pausing the game tick)
- Mod loading (reading dozens of mod files on startup)
Some budget hosts still run SATA SSD or even HDD. This is fine for a tiny server with no mods. For anything with active players and a growing world, NVMe is worth it.
3. Network Quality and Region
Latency is physics, not engineering. Light through fiber travels at about two-thirds the speed of light, and each network hop adds processing delay. A server in Amsterdam will always have higher latency for a player in Sydney than a server in Singapore.
Pick a host with a location close to where most of your players are. If your players are split across regions, pick the location that minimizes the worst-case latency, or consider running multiple server instances in different regions.
DDoS protection is a requirement, not a feature. Game servers, especially popular ones on public server lists, get targeted. Protection should be included by default, not a paid add-on.
What Matters Less Than You Think
RAM (above a threshold). Yes, you need enough RAM. But "enough" is a known quantity for each game. A Minecraft server with 20 players and 50 mods needs 6-8 GB. A Palworld server needs 8-12 GB. A Valheim server needs 4-6 GB. Once you have enough for your game, more RAM does nothing.
The question is not "how much RAM can I get?" but "does this host offer the tier I need, and can I upgrade later?"
Core count. Game servers rarely use more than 2-3 cores. A plan that advertises 8 dedicated cores for your game server is selling you resources you will not use. Two fast cores beats eight slow ones for game hosting.
Control panel brand. Pterodactyl, Multicraft, custom panels. They all let you start, stop, configure, and access files. The panel is a wrapper around the server binary. It matters for convenience, not for performance.
"Unlimited" anything. Unlimited bandwidth, unlimited slots, unlimited databases. These are marketing terms that mean "we have not hit a limit that matters for typical use." Actual resource limits exist. They are just phrased differently in the terms of service.
Game-Specific Considerations
Different games stress servers differently. Here is a quick reference:

The "Runtime" column matters because it affects whether the host needs to provide Wine/Proton compatibility. Some hosts handle this automatically; others leave it to you.
Red Flags
No CPU model specified. If the provider says "high-performance hardware" without naming the CPU, it is probably not high-performance hardware.
No region options. A host with one data center is forcing everyone onto the same location. Fine if that location works for you. Bad if your players are on another continent.
Plans priced exclusively by player slots. Player slot pricing makes no sense because different games use wildly different resources per player. A 10-slot ARK server needs far more hardware than a 10-slot Valheim server. Pricing by RAM, CPU, and storage gives you transparency about what you are actually getting.
No refund policy or trial. You should be able to test whether the server performs well for your specific game and player count. A host that will not let you try before committing long-term is banking on inertia.
Support that only answers tickets during business hours. Game servers run 24/7. Your players are online at midnight. If the server goes down on a Saturday night, a response on Monday morning is not useful.
How to Test a New Host
- Order the smallest plan that fits your game. Do not overbuy on the first order.
- Deploy your game with your actual configuration: your mods, your map, your settings.
- Get your players online. Performance with 2 players testing is not the same as performance with 20 players doing normal gameplay.
- Monitor for a full play session. Check tick rate, RAM usage, and whether the server lags during peak moments (combat, base loading, events).
- Test a restart cycle. How long does a restart take? Does the server come back cleanly?
- Open a support ticket with a technical question. The response time and quality tells you more about the host than any marketing page.
If everything checks out, upgrade to the plan you actually need.
