Roblox Studio System Requirements (2026): RAM, CPU and GPU

Published on

The official Roblox Studio requirements for Windows and Mac, what Roblox leaves out about CPU and graphics, and how much RAM real projects need in 2026.

Building a Roblox place in Studio on a laptop

Short answer: Roblox Studio needs Windows 10 or macOS 10.14 and 3 GB of memory at the very least. Roblox recommends Windows 11 or macOS 14 and newer, 8 GB of memory and a screen of 1600 × 900 or more. Roblox publishes no processor or graphics card requirement for Studio, and Studio does not run on ChromeOS, Linux, iPad or Android.

The numbers come from Roblox's own Studio setup page. Below is what they mean in practice, and where Studio needs more than the minimum.

The official requirements

Minimum

  • Windows 10, or macOS 10.14
  • 3 GB of memory

Recommended

  • Windows 11, or macOS 14 or newer
  • 8 GB of memory
  • A screen of 1600 × 900 or higher

Roblox describes Studio as "a free application available on Windows and Mac". Other systems are not supported: the education FAQ says "Roblox Studio cannot run on Chromebooks or mobile devices such as smartphones", and the help center says "Roblox is not supported on Linux".

You may find an older help article that says Studio installs on macOS 10.13. The current setup page says 10.14, so go by that.

What Roblox does not list: processor and graphics

For Studio, Roblox gives no processor or graphics card figures. The only hardware numbers it publishes are for Roblox Player on Windows, in its system requirements article:

  • 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11
  • A graphics card with "DirectX 10 or higher feature level support"
  • Recommended: a processor from 2005 or later at 1.6 GHz or more, at least 1 GB of memory and 300 MB of storage

Studio does more work than the player. Every time you press Play to test, Studio runs the game server and a game client at the same time. Roblox's performance guide puts it this way: "when you test a game in Studio, it runs the server and the client, so memory usage is significantly higher." Testing with several players is heavier still: the multi-client test mode opens "multiple sessions of Studio", with up to eight clients.

How much RAM you really need

  • 3 to 4 GB: Studio opens, and you can script and edit a small place. Testing is slow, and there is little room left for a browser or Discord next to it.
  • 8 GB: what Roblox recommends, and enough for scripting, UI work and small to medium places with a normal test session.
  • 16 GB or more: comfortable for big places with many parts and scripts, multi-client tests, several plugins, and Discord and a browser open at the same time.

Memory use also depends on Studio's own features. In September 2026 a Roblox staff member noted on the DevForum that "the New Luau Type Solver uses a fair amount of memory", and that turning the Scripting setting UseNewLuauTypeSolver off "could provide some memory pressure relief" (DevForum). Worth trying if Studio suddenly takes far more memory than before.

To see what is using memory, Roblox points to the Developer Console's memory tools (memory usage guide), the performance stats and the MicroProfiler. Roblox warns that "performance stats in Studio are skewed by the Studio application", so check numbers in a real game session as well.

Do you need a graphics card for Studio?

Not for most building. Roblox lists no graphics requirement for Studio, and integrated graphics in a recent laptop handle scripting, terrain and normal places fine. A dedicated card helps when you work on scenes with heavy lighting, many effects or large terrain, and when you test at high graphics quality.

Studio even runs on a computer without any graphics card: Windows then draws the picture on the processor with its built-in software renderer. That is slower, but enough for scripting and smaller places, and it is how our Studio Starter plan works (more on that below).

No Windows PC or Mac?

If you only have a Chromebook, an iPad or a Linux laptop, Studio will not run on it directly. Your options are Linux with the unofficial Vinegar launcher (on an Intel or AMD Chromebook with enough memory), controlling a PC you own from a distance, or a Windows cloud PC. We go through all three in Roblox Studio on a Chromebook.

A cloud PC is what we sell as a Roblox VPS, hosted in the Netherlands:

  • Studio Starter, €19.99 a month: 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM and 80 GB NVMe, without a graphics card. For Roblox Studio. Roblox Player does not start on it.
  • Roblox Cloud PC, €49.99 a month: a dedicated mini PC with 16 to 32 GB RAM and integrated graphics, for bigger places and for playing your game in Roblox Player.

FAQ

Can Roblox Studio run on 4 GB of RAM?

Yes, it opens: the minimum is 3 GB. But Windows and Studio together leave little room, and pressing Play to test doubles the work because Studio runs a server and a client. 8 GB is the realistic minimum for regular use.

Does Roblox Studio need a graphics card?

Roblox lists no graphics card for Studio. Integrated graphics are enough for most work, and Studio can even run without a graphics card at all, more slowly.

Can I run Roblox Studio on Linux?

Not officially: Roblox says it is not supported on Linux. The open source Vinegar launcher runs Studio on many Linux systems with an x86-64 processor, but it is not made or supported by Roblox.

Why does Roblox Studio use so much memory?

Testing runs a server and a client together, and the new Luau type solver for scripts uses extra memory. Close test sessions you no longer need, and see the staff tip above about the UseNewLuauTypeSolver setting.
