Shaders can make RLCraft's dark, moody atmosphere look dramatically better, but the modpack's 1.12.2 base and heavy entity load mean shader choice matters more here than in most modern modpacks.
Why RLCraft is picky about shaders
RLCraft runs on an older version of Optifine built for Minecraft 1.12.2, which limits which shader packs are actually compatible. Many popular modern shader packs are built for 1.17+ Optifine or Iris forks and simply won't load correctly, or will load with broken lighting and severe FPS drops.
Shaders that work well with RLCraft
- Older builds of BSL Shaders compiled for 1.12.2 Optifine tend to be the most stable and give a solid balance of visuals and performance
- Complementary Shaders (legacy 1.12.2 builds) for players who want more atmosphere without pushing hardware too hard
- Sildur's Vibrant Shaders (legacy version) is a lighter option if your hardware is older or you're running RLCraft alongside other demanding mods
Always confirm you're downloading a build specifically compiled for the 1.12.2 Optifine version bundled with RLCraft, not a generic "latest" download, which is almost always built for a newer Minecraft version and won't be compatible.
Performance tips for shaders on RLCraft
- Lower shadow distance first, it's usually the biggest FPS cost with minimal visual impact
- Disable volumetric clouds or fog options if you're seeing stutter during exploration
- Test shaders in singleplayer before joining a busy multiplayer world, RLCraft's entity count already taxes GPU-bound rendering during combat
- If FPS drops mainly happen during combat, the cause is more likely Lycanites Mobs' entity count than the shader itself
Server-side considerations
