RLCraft is famous for killing new players in the first few in-game days. Most of the deaths come from not understanding a handful of systems rather than the difficulty itself. Here is what actually matters in your first week.
Priority one: manage temperature immediately
Tough As Nails adds temperature as a survival mechanic, and it can kill you just as fast as a mob. Craft basic armor for insulation as soon as possible, and always carry a torch or campfire for warmth at night. Freezing to death in the first hour is one of the most common early RLCraft deaths.
Priority two: don't fight anything you don't recognize
Lycanites Mobs adds dozens of creatures with wildly different behaviors and attack patterns. A creature that looks harmless can deal serious damage or apply debuffs you're not prepared for. In your first week, avoid unfamiliar mobs entirely rather than testing them in melee.
Priority three: get a shield as fast as possible
RLCraft combat is built around blocking, not just dodging. A basic shield drastically reduces early-game deaths from surprise attacks, especially from mobs that hit harder than vanilla Minecraft ever does.
Priority four: don't sleep near open ground
Sleeping doesn't skip the night safely by default the way it does in vanilla. Build an enclosed, roofed shelter with no gaps before your first night, since many of RLCraft's dangerous mobs are more active after dark.
Priority five: check your health bar system, not just hearts
First Aid changes how health works, damage affects individual body parts instead of a single health pool. Understand this before you assume a full heart bar means you're safe, a leg injury can slow you down even if your overall health looks fine.
What to avoid entirely early on
- Don't explore Battle Towers or dungeons alone before you have decent gear
- Don't ignore hunger for "just a bit longer", RLCraft's hunger penalties escalate faster than vanilla
- Don't assume enchanted gear from vanilla knowledge works the same way, RLCraft changes several enchantment mechanics
Playing with friends
If you're setting up a server for a group rather than singleplayer, difficulty can be tuned to be more forgiving for beginners. See our RLCraft difficulty configuration guide for the exact config values to adjust spawn rates and damage scaling.
