Best RLCraft Add-Ons and Optional Mods for 2026

Published on

RLCraft is already a full modpack, but these client-side additions and optional server mods make it more playable without changing the core experience.

RLCraft mods and addons

RLCraft is designed as a locked, curated modpack, but there is still room to add client-side quality-of-life mods and a handful of optional server-side tweaks without breaking the core experience. Here is what the community actually uses in 2026.

Client-side additions (safe for any server)

These do not need to match on the server and won't get you flagged for using an "unofficial" client:

  • JEI (Just Enough Items) is already bundled, but make sure it is enabled in the config if recipes aren't showing
  • Xaero's Minimap and World Map for navigation, RLCraft's world generation makes it easy to get lost
  • Optifine or Sodium-compatible forks for 1.12.2 to boost FPS on modern hardware
  • Better Third Person for a smoother camera angle when tracking enemies

Server-side optional additions

If you run your own RLCraft server, some admins add lightweight compatible mods without disrupting balance:

  • Waystones (1.12.2 compatible fork) to reduce travel time between bases in large worlds
  • Corpse mods so death penalties feel fair rather than punishing
  • FTB Utilities or similar team/claim mods for shared servers to prevent griefing

Always check mod compatibility against RLCraft's exact Forge and Minecraft build before adding anything server-side. Adding an incompatible mod is one of the most common causes of crash loops on RLCraft servers.

What NOT to add

  • Performance mods that change entity handling (they often conflict with Lycanites Mobs' custom spawn logic)
  • Newer shader mods built for 1.16+ forks of Optifine, they frequently break on 1.12.2
  • Any mod that changes hunger, temperature, or health systems, these will conflict directly with Tough As Nails, First Aid, and Scaling Health

Dregora and terrain overhaul packs

Some players ask about pairing RLCraft with Dregora-style terrain generation mods for a visual overhaul. This is possible but adds significant world generation cost on top of RLCraft's already expensive biome features. If you want to try it, pre-generate the world in advance rather than letting players explore live, and budget extra CPU headroom.

Hosting for a modded RLCraft server

Adding extra mods increases entity load and RAM usage beyond the baseline numbers in our RLCraft RAM requirements guide. If you're adding several optional mods, size up one tier from what you'd normally pick, MC Diamond (8GB DDR4) instead of MC Gold (5GB DDR4) on Space-Node's Minecraft plans.
