Shaders transform Minecraft from blocky simplicity into something visually stunning. Realistic lighting, water reflections, volumetric clouds, and dynamic shadows. Here are the best shader packs available in 2026.
How to Use Shaders
You need a shader loader. Two options:
- Iris + Sodium (Fabric or NeoForge). Best performance. Recommended. Current Iris requires Sodium, so install both. Iris covers Minecraft 26.3 on NeoForge as well since version 1.11.7, released on 30 September 2026.
- Oculus + Embeddium (Forge, Minecraft 1.20.1 and older). Only for older Forge modpacks. Oculus has no build newer than 1.20.1.

Download your chosen shader pack as a .zip file. Place it in .minecraft/shaderpacks/. Enable it in Video Settings > Shader Packs.

1. Complementary Reimagined
The most popular shader pack in 2026. Balanced between beauty and performance. Features volumetric lighting, realistic water, custom sky, and ambient occlusion. Multiple presets from low to ultra.
Best for: Most players. Great default choice.

Tips for Better Shader Performance
- Run your shaders on Sodium (Fabric or NeoForge), which current Iris requires anyway. Older Forge packs on 1.20.1 use Embeddium under Oculus instead.
- Lower render distance to 8 to 12 chunks.
- Reduce shadow quality in shader settings.
- Disable volumetric fog if FPS is low.
- 1080p runs much better than 1440p or 4K with shaders.

Shaders are client-side. They do not affect server performance or other players. Install them on your computer and connect to any server normally.
