Your best miner sits at Mining 7, the cap is now 10, and every guide mentions Applied Technique books without saying where they come from. Pocketpair's 1.0 changelog says it "adjusted things so that Applied Technique items are easier to obtain", but lists no sources. Below: every book, where it drops, the guaranteed copy most of them have somewhere on the map, and the PalWorldSettings.ini lines that change how fast a server group collects them. Checked on 3 November 2026 against v1.0.5, the latest patch on Steam.
Quick answer: The Applied Technique books are twelve items called Applied (work type) Handbook I, and each one raises one work level of a Pal by 1. The dependable source is the Medal Merchant in four church ruins, who sells all twelve for 300 Dog Coins each. The other applied technique books locations in Palworld: every Lucky Pal gives one at random, each raid boss drops one from a fixed set of three, supply drops on Feybreak and Sunreach and the better Treasure Maps carry them, and paldb.cc's game data has a one-time copy of eleven of the twelve in Ancient Ruins. On a server, SupplyDropSpan and EnemyDropItemRate are the settings worth changing; the gathering rates do not touch the books.
What the Books Do
Pocketpair's notes call them Applied Technique items, while the items in your inventory end in "Handbook I". The wiki.gg item pages record the switch: 1.0 renamed, for example, Applied Mining Technique I to Applied Mining Handbook I.
All twelve carry the same in-game text, with the work type swapped in: "A rare book written about the secrets of Gathering. Allowing a Pal to read it permanently increases their Gathering affinity by +1." There is one per work type: Kindling, Watering, Planting, Generating Electricity, Handiwork, Gathering, Lumbering, Mining, Medicine Production, Cooling, Transporting and Ranching. The Ranching book is new in 1.0, and its text says Farming, the name the game uses for Ranch work.
Both community wikis agree that a Pal can read each book only once, so one Pal takes at most one book per work type. wiki.gg adds that the Pal must already have that work type.
Where a book fits since 1.0, from Pocketpair's changelog:
- Work Suitability levels "have been expanded to 10 levels".
- "Each time a Pal ranks up, one of its Work Suitability Levels will now increase", and maximum rank raises all of them.
- Some Partner Skills add a level to every other Pal at the base: Ribbuny for Handiwork, Cinnamoth for Farming (neither stacks).
- The new Ranch Master passive gives "Ranch Work Suitability +2".
So a book is the last step to 10, not the first. Give it to a Pal you will keep at the base for good.
Applied Technique Books Locations in Palworld
The Medal Merchant: Every Book for 300 Dog Coins
This is the source you can plan around. palworld.wiki.gg and the Palworld Fandom wiki both list all twelve books in the Medal Merchant's stock at 300 Dog Coins each, and paldb.cc shows the same twelve in his shop data. Both wikis place him in the same four churches: Desolate Church, Isle of Silence Church Ruins, Marsh Island Church Ruins and Sea Breeze Archipelago Church. Pocketpair's 1.0 notes say new items were added to his Dog Coin shop and that the number of Dog Coins for each item was "reviewed and adjusted".
Dog Coins come mostly from Mimogs. The item's own text says "A Mimog will usually have them, but for some reason, they cannot be obtained by butchering it", so breeding Mimogs for the coins does not work. A wild Mimog drops them when you defeat or catch it: 14 to 21 for a low level one on both wiki.gg and paldb.cc, and paldb's v1.0.5 table raises that with level, to 140 to 210 for a level 70 Mimog. wiki.gg also lists Junkyards, Salvage Spots, Elemental Treasure Chests and Ancient Ruins as sources. Two or three high level Mimogs pay for one book.
Lucky Pals: One Random Book Each
Our resource locations guide quotes Pocketpair's line that Lucky Pals now give Work Suitability items. Going deeper: both wikis say each Lucky Pal gives one book, picked at random from the twelve, so you cannot aim for a specific one. Pocketpair also says Lucky Pals "now start at a higher rank when captured". wiki.gg says the chance of a Lucky spawn is unknown and gives one tip: listen for the sparkling sound they make. No server setting controls that chance.
Raid Bosses: Three Books Each
paldb.cc's v1.0.5 drop tables give every raid boss three books at 33.3% each. wiki.gg's Moon Lord page has the same three books for Moon Lord and explains the pattern: you are guaranteed one of them, and the Master version gives two. For the other bosses only paldb.cc has 1.0 data; wiki.gg's raid tables still list the +2 accessories that Pocketpair removed in 1.0. The Ultra versions give two books in paldb's data.
| Raid boss | Books it drops |
|---|---|
| Bellanoir, Bellanoir Libero | Medicine Production, Ranching, Transporting |
| Blazamut Ryu | Gathering, Lumbering, Mining |
| Xenolord | Cooling, Generating Electricity, Handiwork |
| Hartalis | Kindling, Planting, Watering |
| Moon Lord | Gathering, Handiwork, Planting |
That makes Bellanoir and Bellanoir Libero the only raid bosses with the Ranching book, and Blazamut Ryu the boss for a mining and logging base.
Supply Drops on Feybreak and Sunreach
Supply drops on Feybreak and Sunreach are the best repeatable source in the loot data, level with the top Treasure Maps. paldb.cc and palworld.tools, which both run on v1.0.5 data, list all twelve books at 8.3% each in those drops. Twelve times 8.333% is 100%, so the tables point to one random book in every supply drop on those two islands. We have not opened enough drops to confirm it, so treat that as the data, not a promise. Supply drops elsewhere list each book at 4.2% or less.
Elemental Treasure Chests
Pocketpair added these in v0.4.11: rare chests that only a Pal of a specific element can open. Each element holds a fixed group of books, and paldb.cc and palworld.tools agree on the groups:
| Chest | Books |
|---|---|
| Water | Cooling, Planting, Ranching, Transporting, Watering |
| Fire | Gathering, Kindling, Mining |
| Electric | Generating Electricity, Handiwork, Lumbering |
Medicine Production is in none of them. The odds are highest in the chests on Sakurajima, Sunreach and the World Tree (about 2.4% to 3.3% per book in paldb's tables), lower in the desert and close to zero in the forest.
Treasure Maps, Salvage and Relics
- Treasure Maps. wiki.gg says the higher quality maps lead to handbooks among other rewards, and that maps mostly come from chests in enemy faction bases. In paldb's data the best map tables carry every book at 8.3%, and the top one can give three copies of a book at once.
- Advanced Salvage Spots. Both wiki.gg and paldb list each book at 0.179%. A bonus, not a plan.
- Ancient Relic Recycler. This late game machine turns World Tree relics into materials, and wiki.gg lists the handbooks among its outputs. paldb puts the odds per relic well under 0.1%.
One Guaranteed Copy of Most Books
paldb.cc lists an Ancient Ruin with a 100% chance for eleven of the twelve books, and a few missions that hand one out. wiki.gg notes that each ruin can be looted only once, so this is one copy per world, not a farm. Only paldb.cc has this list; the coordinates are its map coordinates.
| Book | Ancient Ruin (paldb.cc map) | Also from |
|---|---|---|
| Kindling | Feybreak Tower Entrance (-1214, -1668) | |
| Watering | Loess Plains Watchtower (-922, -1398) | Mission: Panthalus |
| Planting | Cinnamoth Forest (-49, -219) | |
| Generating Electricity | Sakurajima: West Coast (-759, 144) | |
| Handiwork | Sakurajima, Northern Rock Field (-568, 349) | |
| Gathering | Icy Weasel Hill (44, 236) | Mission: Give a Fuack |
| Lumbering | Garden Beneath the Cliffs (-247, 185) | |
| Mining | Azure Covenant Tower Entrance (-463, -1458) | Mission: Metal on Your Mind |
| Medicine Production | Waterlily Gorge (-466, -1535) | |
| Cooling | Land of Absolute Zero (-302, 537) | Mission: Lock In |
| Transporting | Duneshelter (302, 279) | |
| Ranching | none |
The Panthalus reward is the one wiki.gg confirms as well: it is the only main mission that gives an item next to its experience, an Applied Watering Handbook I. For Ranching, plan on the Medal Merchant or Bellanoir.
Server Rates That Change How Fast Your Group Farms Them
No server setting touches the books directly. Pocketpair's configuration page has no Lucky Pal rate, no shop price and no chest table. Two lines still change how fast a group collects books, and two that sound useful do not.
| Setting | Pocketpair's description | Effect on books |
|---|---|---|
SupplyDropSpan | Meteorite / supply drop interval (minutes) | Lower it and supply drops come more often; on Feybreak and Sunreach the data lists a book in each |
EnemyDropItemRate | Dropped item quantity multiplier | Bigger drop stacks; test it on the Dog Coins a Mimog drops |
CollectionDropRate | Gatherable items multiplier | Rocks and trees only, no books |
CollectionObjectRespawnSpeedRate | Gatherable objects respawn interval | Same, no books |
SupplyDropSpan. wiki.gg's Meteorite Event page puts the default at one drop every three hours and adds that meteorites and supply drops land at fixed points near players, never in starter zones or Wildlife Sanctuaries. The same timer drives the meteorite event, which wiki.gg says can spawn Pals such as Xenovader, so a much lower value also means more of those events. After a change, watch a few hours of play to see that drops really come more often.
EnemyDropItemRate. Pocketpair's description is one line, so test it before you announce it: defeat a Mimog of a known level before and after the change and compare the Dog Coin stack. Nothing in the docs says it also multiplies raid boss rewards or a Lucky Pal's book, so do not promise your players two books per Lucky Pal.
To change them, stop the server, open Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/PalWorldSettings.ini (WindowsServer on Windows), find both keys in the long OptionSettings=(...) line, where every setting sits as Key=Value between commas, and change their values so the entries read EnemyDropItemRate=2.000000 and SupplyDropSpan=90. Start the server again. Pocketpair notes that editing DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini changes nothing. With the REST API on, GET /v1/api/settings shows EnemyDropItemRate and the gathering rates the server loaded; SupplyDropSpan is not in that response, so check the file for that one. Our Palworld admin commands guide covers turning the REST API on, and why RCON is no longer the way to do it.
On a Space-Node Palworld server you get full access to PalWorldSettings.ini, and changes apply on the next restart. Agree on the rates with your group before the first session, since they change what a 300 Dog Coin book is worth.
FAQ
What are the applied technique books locations in Palworld? The Medal Merchant in four church ruins sells all twelve for 300 Dog Coins each. They also come from Lucky Pals, raid bosses, supply drops on Feybreak and Sunreach, Elemental Treasure Chests, the better Treasure Maps and, once per world, an Ancient Ruin for eleven of the twelve.
How many Dog Coins does an Applied Handbook cost? 300 at the Medal Merchant, for every one of the twelve. A low level Mimog drops 14 to 21 Dog Coins and a level 70 Mimog 140 to 210, so high level Mimogs are the fastest way to save up.
Can a Pal read the same handbook twice? No. Both wikis say each book works once per Pal, so one Pal can take one book per work type. Work levels above that come from ranks, Partner Skills and passives such as Ranch Master.
Where do I get the Applied Ranching Handbook I? From the Medal Merchant, from Bellanoir and Bellanoir Libero as raid bosses, from Lucky Pals and supply drops at random, and from Water chests. paldb.cc lists no guaranteed Ancient Ruin copy for it.
Does a higher EnemyDropItemRate give more handbooks?
Pocketpair only describes it as a dropped item quantity multiplier and does not say which drops it covers. It does help indirectly through Dog Coins from Mimogs. For more book drops, lower SupplyDropSpan instead.
Why can't I find "Applied Mining Technique I" in my game? 1.0 renamed the books. The same item is now called Applied Mining Handbook I, and the other eleven follow the same pattern.
