Mega evolution is not part of base Cobblemon. It requires an addon called Cobblemon Mega Showdown (or similar community addons) that adds mega stones, mega evolution mechanics, and the Pokemon that support it. Here is how to set it up.
Why mega evolution is not in base Cobblemon
The Cobblemon team focuses on implementing core Pokemon mechanics first. Mega evolution is a generation 6 feature that requires custom models, animations, stat changes, and item interactions. Community addons handle this separately so the base mod stays stable.
Installing Mega Showdown
- Download the Cobblemon Mega Showdown addon from Modrinth or its official source.
- Make sure the addon version matches your Cobblemon version exactly. Version mismatches cause crashes.
- Place the addon jar in your
modsfolder alongside Cobblemon. - Restart the server.
The addon adds mega stones as obtainable items and enables mega evolution in battle when a Pokemon holds its matching mega stone.
How mega evolution works in game
- Obtain the correct mega stone for your Pokemon (for example, Charizardite X for Charizard).
- Give the mega stone to the Pokemon as a held item.
- Enter a battle. The mega evolution option appears when the Pokemon is sent out.
- Mega evolution lasts for the duration of the battle. Only one Pokemon per team can mega evolve per battle.
Which Pokemon can mega evolve
The addon typically supports the same mega evolutions as the main Pokemon games: Charizard (X and Y), Blastoise, Venusaur, Lucario, Garchomp, Mewtwo, Gengar, Alakazam, and others. The exact list depends on the addon version and which models have been implemented.
Check the addon's documentation for the current supported mega evolution list.
Server configuration
As a server admin, you can configure:
- Whether mega evolution is enabled in wild battles, trainer battles, or PvP.
- Mega stone drop rates and locations.
- Which mega evolutions are allowed (useful for balancing competitive servers).
These settings are in the addon's config file, not the base Cobblemon config.
Common issues
- Crash on startup: version mismatch between Cobblemon and the addon. Update both to compatible versions.
- Mega stone not working: the Pokemon may not be supported in the current addon version.
- Missing models: some mega evolutions may not have custom models yet and show as the base form.
The short answer
Mega evolution in Cobblemon requires a community addon like Mega Showdown. Install it alongside Cobblemon, match versions carefully, and give Pokemon their mega stones as held items.
Host your Cobblemon server on Space-Node with Fabric or NeoForge support. See our Minecraft hosting plans or the modpack hosting page.
