If you own a FiveM roleplay community, or you spend your evenings inside one, you have probably seen the same question showing up everywhere lately: what happens to FiveM once GTA 6 comes out. It is a fair thing to worry about. You have put real time and, for a lot of server owners, real money into scripts, MLOs, a Discord, a player base, maybe a whole staff team. Nobody wants to find out that work is about to be obsolete.
Here is the actual, confirmed situation, without the speculation that a lot of the "will RP survive GTA 6" articles are currently running with.
What Is Actually Confirmed About GTA 6
GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is no PC version at launch, and there is no GTA Online mode at launch either. Multiple outlets covering the announcement have reported the same two points consistently.
That is the full extent of what is confirmed. Nobody outside Rockstar knows if or when a PC version will eventually arrive, and this article is not going to guess. What matters for FiveM right now is simply this: at launch, GTA 6 is a console only game with no online multiplayer mode.
Why That Matters for FiveM
FiveM is a modification framework built on top of GTA V, and it runs on PC. That is the whole point of it: it takes the base game you already own and lets a community run a completely custom multiplayer server on top of it, with its own scripts, economy, jobs, cars, and rules.
A console only launch with no online mode does not touch any part of that. FiveM does not need Rockstar to release a sequel with multiplayer support for it to keep working. It needs GTA V, on PC, which has been out for over a decade and is not going anywhere. Your server, your scripts, and your community's setup are not affected by what happens on PS5 and Xbox in November.
Could a PC version and an online mode show up eventually and change the picture years down the line? Maybe. Nobody knows, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. But "eventually, on an unannounced date, possibly" is a very different thing from "my server stops working this year," which is the fear a lot of the anxious search traffic around this topic is really about.
FiveM Itself Is Being Actively Upgraded, Not Wound Down
The other part of this that gets lost in the panic: FiveM's own development has not slowed down. OneSync, the custom networking layer that lets FiveM servers hold far more players than GTA V's original multiplayer ever supported, is getting a further overhaul aimed at supporting up to 2,048 players. That is not the roadmap of a project being quietly retired. It is the opposite. If the platform were about to be abandoned, nobody would be spending engineering time expanding its networking ceiling by that much.

So Should You Keep Building?
If you are running a server, or thinking about starting one, the honest answer is yes. Nothing confirmed about GTA 6 changes the case for investing in a FiveM community today. Your scripts, your MLOs, your framework choice, all of it keeps working exactly as it does now.
That said, a few habits are just good practice regardless of what any future game does:
- Keep your scripts and assets backed up and organized. Good practice for any project, and it means you are never dependent on a single machine or a single person's laptop.
- Pick a framework with active maintenance. If you are starting fresh, look at where the ecosystem is actually moving. See our comparison of ESX vs QBCore vs QBox for where framework development is headed in 2026.
- Don't make decisions based on speculation. Plenty of content out there right now is guessing at PC release dates or an eventual GTA 6 Online mode. None of that is confirmed, and building your plans around a rumor is a worse idea than building around what is actually known.
FAQ
Is FiveM shutting down because of GTA 6? No. Nothing about the GTA 6 announcement affects FiveM. GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox only, with no PC version and no GTA Online mode at launch, and FiveM runs on GTA V, on PC.
Will GTA 6 come to PC eventually? Rockstar has not confirmed a PC release date for GTA 6. Treat any specific date you see elsewhere as speculation, not confirmed information.
Does GTA 6 have an online multiplayer mode? Not at launch. Confirmed reporting says GTA 6 launches without a GTA Online mode. Whether that changes later has not been announced.
Is FiveM still being developed? Yes. OneSync, FiveM's core networking layer, is being overhauled to support up to 2,048 players, which is an active expansion of the platform, not a sign of it winding down.
Should I still start a new FiveM roleplay server in 2026? Based on what is confirmed today, yes. GTA V and FiveM keep running exactly as they do now, and none of the confirmed GTA 6 details change that.
Keep Your Community Running Smoothly
Worrying about a hypothetical future is a lot easier to set aside when the server you already have runs well today. If lag, crashes, or cheap oversold hosting are the real thing holding your community back, that is a problem you can fix right now.
