If you want a genuinely hard Minecraft experience in 2026, these three modpacks come up constantly. They are not the same kind of difficult, though, and picking the right one depends on what you actually enjoy.
RLCraft: survival-first, punishing by design
RLCraft is built on Minecraft 1.12.2 and focuses on making basic survival harder, temperature, hunger, health, and mob difficulty are all tuned to punish careless play. There is no structured progression system beyond gear and levels. It rewards careful, deliberate play and heavy caution.

Prominence II: RPG progression with a story
Prominence II adds a structured RPG-style progression system with quests, custom bosses, and a clearer sense of direction than RLCraft. It's still difficult, but the challenge comes from a designed curve rather than raw chaos.

Vault Hunters: dungeon-crawling with roguelike loops
Vault Hunters centers on repeatable "vault" dungeons with randomized loot and increasing difficulty, closer to a roguelike loop than open survival. It's the most structured of the three, built around repeated runs rather than a single continuous world.

Which one should you host?
If your group wants classic, unforgiving survival with no hand-holding, RLCraft is still the reference point in 2026. If they want structure, quests, and a sense of progress, Prominence II fits better. If they want short, replayable dungeon runs with friends, Vault Hunters is the closer match.
