Hytale's Mod Browser Just Shipped: What It Means for Your Server

Hytale added an in-game mod browser in its August 2026 update. What the browser actually covers, how server-side mods differ from client mods, and how to run a modded Hytale server while the ecosystem is this young.

Hytale's mid-August update added an in-game mod browser to the main menu, the biggest step for its modding ecosystem since Early Access launched in January. If you run a Hytale server, this changes what your players expect: mods just became something everyone can find and install in two clicks, and "can we run mods on our server" is about to become the most-asked question in your Discord.

What Actually Shipped

The browser lives in the main menu and lets players discover and install mods without leaving the game. Hytale shipped Early Access with mod support and server files from day one, but until now, finding and installing mods meant third-party sites and manual file management. The browser removes that friction on the client side.

What the browser does not change: how mods get onto a server. Server-side mods are still installed by the server operator, in the server's own mod directory, the same way they were before the browser existed.

Client Mods vs Server Mods on Hytale

The distinction that trips new admins up:

  • Client-side mods (visual changes, UI, audio) live on each player's machine. Players grab these from the browser themselves, and your server does not need to know about them.
  • Server-side mods (new content, gameplay rules, world behavior) install on the server. Players joining a server with server-side content receive what they need on join, which is exactly why the server operator controls this side.

If a mod changes what exists in the world, it belongs on the server. If it changes how the world looks or sounds to one player, it belongs on the client.

Running a Modded Hytale Server Right Now

An honest status report, because the ecosystem is seven months old:

  1. Expect breakage on the weekly patch cadence. Hytale patches weekly, and mods lag behind patches. Pin popular mods to versions confirmed working, and treat every game update as a potential mod-compat event, the same discipline Minecraft modded servers learned years ago.
  2. Back up before every mod change. Hytale worlds are young, mod quality varies, and a bad interaction on a young game engine is more likely than on a mature one.
  3. Size RAM for mods, not vanilla. Public vanilla servers already want 8 to 12GB once player counts are real. Mods add on top. Our Hytale server requirements guide has the baseline table.
  4. Add mods one at a time. With no mature dependency ecosystem yet, isolating which mod broke your server is only possible if you did not install five at once.

FAQ

Do players need to download mods before joining my modded server? Server-side content is delivered on join. Client-side mods are personal choice and do not affect joining.

Does the mod browser work for servers directly? The browser is a client-facing discovery tool. Server operators still install server-side mods into the server's mod directory manually.

Will mods survive Hytale updates? Not reliably yet. The game patches weekly and the modding API is still evolving through Early Access. Pin versions and update deliberately.

Can I run a modded Hytale server on Space-Node? Yes. You get full file access to the server's mod directory on every plan. See Hytale server hosting.
