The thing most people get wrong is the CPU: Hytale's server work is largely single threaded, so clock speed beats core count. A fast four core machine outperforms a slow sixteen core one.

Storage is the resource people forget: budget around 20GB, on NVMe if you can. World data grows as your players explore, and running out of disk is a more abrupt failure than running low on memory.
Why clock speed matters more than cores
This is the single most useful thing to understand before you buy anything.
Hytale's server does most of its per tick work on a single thread. That means a processor with sixteen slow cores does not help you: fifteen of them sit idle while one struggles. A processor with fewer, faster cores does the same work sooner.
The practical effect on shopping: a plan advertising a large core count at a low clock is worse for Hytale than a plan with fewer cores at a high clock, even when the first one looks more impressive on the spec sheet.
This is the same reason Minecraft servers behave the way they do, and it catches out people who assume more cores is simply better.
Ignore advertised player slots
Several hosts advertise unlimited player slots for Hytale. That number tells you nothing about whether the server holds up.
A slot is permission to connect. What decides whether thirty people have a good time is RAM, single thread speed, and how much of the world has been generated. A plan offering unlimited slots on 4GB will not carry thirty players in a developed world, regardless of what the marketing says.
Compare memory and clock speed. Ignore the slot count entirely.
What to expect from a game this young
Being honest about this matters more than sounding confident.
Hytale is a few months into Early Access. Server requirements at this stage are not settled, and they can move meaningfully with an update. The developers have said the modding and creative tools are "in a decent state" while being clear they are "not where we want them long term", so the tooling around servers is still developing too.
What that means practically:
Start smaller than you think you need. It is much easier to move up a tier than to justify having paid for headroom you never used, particularly for a game where your group might still be deciding whether it sticks.
Expect requirements to change. A number that is right today may not be right after a large update. That is normal for Early Access and not a reason to avoid hosting, just a reason not to buy three years of a large plan up front.
Keep your own backups. Early Access games break saves occasionally. A host's backups are a convenience, your own copy is the insurance.
Setting one up
The shape of it is the same as most dedicated servers: upload the server files, launch once so it generates its configuration, open the port for inbound traffic, then invite players and watch CPU and memory while they play.
That last part is the step people skip and the one that actually tells you whether your tier is right. Watch the server during your busiest session, not while it is empty. An idle Hytale server tells you nothing.
