No, Hytale is not free. It is a paid Early Access game that Hypixel Studios sells on its own store, where the Standard Edition, the most basic of its three editions, is priced at 19.99 USD before tax, and you download it through the official Hytale Launcher for Windows, Apple Silicon Macs and Linux, not through Steam.
Everything below comes from Hypixel's own pages, read on 25 October 2026: the store, the download page, the first official FAQ and the news posts linked along the way.
What Hytale costs
Hypixel put a number on the entry price before launch. In its FAQ of 3 December 2025, Executive Director Patrick "Lyall" Derbic wrote that the studio had "initially reduced the price of the Standard Edition to 19.99 USD across the globe", because regional pricing might not be ready in time. The launch post of 13 January 2026 repeated the price: "Get the Starter Edition right here for only $19.99 USD."
The store still charges that. On 25 October 2026 its price list had the Standard Edition at 19.99 USD, Supporter at 34.99 USD and Cursebreaker at 69.99 USD. Those are prices before tax: the store adds sales tax or VAT on top. The same FAQ said Hypixel was working with its payment partner on regional pricing "for a limited number of countries to start with".
A few things that shape the price:
- Upgrades cost the difference. The FAQ says you can upgrade to a bigger edition later "and only pay the difference between your old and new editions". The store's upgrade prices match that: 15 USD from Standard to Supporter, 50 USD from Standard to Cursebreaker and 35 USD from Supporter to Cursebreaker.
- Editions are Early Access only. The store calls them limited editions, "only available for purchase during Early Access", and "All unlocks from these editions will stay on your account even after the Early Access period is over."
- No pay to win. The FAQ promises "we will never add P2W options". The editions differ in cosmetics, not in what you can do in the game.
The three editions
The store lists game access in every edition. The rest is cosmetics, and for Cursebreaker, copies to give away. As listed on store.hytale.com on 25 October 2026:

The gift codes are the part that matters if you want friends to join you. The store says every Cursebreaker Edition comes with a Standard Edition gift code "to share with a friend or family member", claimed from your game profile after purchase. On top of that, the Chapter I announcement of 12 October 2026 says Cursebreaker owners get "1 extra Standard Edition copy to give away for every Hytale Early Access Chapter we release". A gift code is redeemed on accounts.hytale.com, and the person redeeming it needs a Hytale account.
Not on Steam, and not on consoles yet
Hypixel sells Hytale on its own store. Asked whether it would come to Steam, the FAQ answered "No, not initially", and a search of the Steam store on 25 October 2026 returns no Hytale listing.
The same FAQ said Early Access would be PC only, with a console version planned "at a later stage", and no mobile version for Early Access. The PC side has grown since then: the download page now lists Windows, Linux and Apple Silicon Macs.
How to download Hytale

Buy an edition on store.hytale.com, or redeem a gift code on accounts.hytale.com.

Download the Hytale Launcher from hytale.com/download. There is an installer (
.exe) for 64-bit Windows, a.dmgfor Macs with Apple Silicon and a Flatpak package for Linux. -
On Linux, set up Flatpak first (flatpak.org/setup) and install the downloaded file with:

Sign in and install. The launcher downloads the game and keeps it updated. You need an internet connection for the download and for periodic authentication; after that, offline play is supported.

Pre-release builds are optional. Hypixel's Update 8 pre-release notes say you enable them in the launcher under Settings, Pre-Release. Leave that off if you play on a server, because players on another build cannot join it.

The graphics card needs drivers with OpenGL 4.1, and Hypixel warns that future versions may also need Vulkan 1.3 and DirectX 12. The store adds that the game still lacks "key accessibility features such as controller support", so plan on mouse and keyboard.
Single player is the heaviest way to play. Hypixel's hardware post explains that your PC then runs the game and the whole server simulation at once, while in multiplayer "the server runs remotely" and your PC only handles graphics and gameplay.
Playing together
Each friend who joins needs their own edition. Cursebreaker comes with gift codes, and the store also sells every edition as a gift copy at the same price as a normal copy. Then you have two ways to play together. You can host your world from the game and let friends join while you play, or run a dedicated server that stays online when you log off. Hypixel's server manual asks for at least 4GB of memory and Java 25 for a dedicated server, and says client and server "must be on the exact same protocol version", so the server has to update when its players do.
