The Mistlands is Valheim's late-game biome: dark, vertical, and covered in thick mist. It introduces magic (Eitr) and the boss The Queen. Here is how to tackle it.
Before You Enter
You should have:
- Padded armor (Plains tier)
- Black Metal weapons or a strong bow
- Frost/poison resistance meads as needed
- A boat to reach the biome
- A Wisplight (see below)
Seeing Through the Mist
The Mistlands is covered in a dense fog that blocks your view. The fix is the Wisplight, and you make it at home before you sail:
- Beat Yagluth. He drops three Torn Spirits.
- Build a Wisp Fountain from 10 Stone and 1 Torn Spirit. It needs a Stonecutter nearby.
- Wait for dark. Wisps gather around the fountain at night, and in rain, and you pick them like a resource.
- Your first Wisp unlocks the Wisplight: 1 Silver and 1 Wisp at the Workbench.
- Equip it in the accessory slot. That is the same slot as the Megingjord and the Wishbone, so you wear one of the three at a time.
Valheim 1.0 increased how far the Wisplight, the Wisp Torch and the Mistwalker sword clear the mist, and every Mistlands weapon now clears some mist too (1.0 patch notes). The Valheim Wiki puts the Wisplight at 15 meters around you. For a base in the biome, Wisp Torches (1 Yggdrasil Wood and 1 Wisp) keep the mist away from a fixed spot for good.
Without the Wisplight, navigation is nearly impossible.

Unlocking Magic (Eitr)
Eitr is the magic resource. To use staves:
- Build a Sap Extractor (it needs a Dvergr Extractor from the crates in Dvergr camps) and put it on an Ancient Root for Sap
- Build an Eitr Refinery from Black Marble, Black Metal, Yggdrasil Wood, Black Cores and Sap
- Feed it Sap and Soft Tissue to make Refined Eitr
- Build the Galdr Table (it also takes Refined Eitr) and craft staves there
- Eat food that gives Eitr, or your staves have nothing to cast with
The Mistlands staves use two skills. Elemental Magic covers the Staff of Embers and the Staff of Frost. Blood Magic covers the Dead Raiser, which summons skeletons, and the Staff of Protection.
Finding The Queen
The Queen lives in the Infested Citadel, a ruined Dvergr structure under a large rock, where a sealed vault door leads into the rock face. Infested Mines (the Seeker dungeons) have the Vegvisirs that point to it, and the pieces of the key:
- Collect 9 Sealbreaker Fragments from the glass displays in Infested Mines
- Craft the Sealbreaker at the Galdr Table
- Use it on the vault door. It is not used up.
She is already inside, so the first fight needs no offering. For a rematch, offer 3 Seeker Soldier Trophies at the hive seat at the top of the citadel.
Beating The Queen
- She teleports around the arena, calls Seekers and broods out of holes in the floor, and spits poison, so bring poison resistance
- She resists pierce damage, so arrows and spears do less than usual
- The covered area at the entrance is out of reach of her own attacks, which makes it the place to heal (her broods can still follow you in)
- Eat the best Mistlands food for max health and stamina
- Carapace armor and Black Metal/Mistlands weapons recommended
Multiplayer Tip
The Mistlands is brutal solo. Tackling it with a group on a dedicated server, such as our Valheim server hosting, makes gathering and the boss fight far more manageable. Allocate 4-6 GB RAM for a small group.
