You are in Hardmode with Wyverns overhead, and you want to know which Terraria wings are worth the farming and where each pair comes from. Instead of repeating a tier list, this guide ranks every pair by the numbers on the official Terraria Wiki's Wings page (last edited 2 November 2026, stats from the game's 1.4.5.6 source code), then shows how to get each pair in progression order, with the best pick per stage. It covers PC version 1.4.5.8, the hotfix of 23 August 2026; Re-Logic's October State of the Game says 1.4.6 is still in final testing.
Quick answer: The best Terraria wings are the Celestial Starboard, always in the Moon Lord's Treasure Bag in Expert and Master Mode. In Classic, the best are the Solar Wings and Stardust Wings, crafted after the Moon Lord: 3 seconds of flight, 46 mph and the fastest climb after the Starboard. Before that, the strongest pairs are boss drops: Empress Wings, Fishron Wings and, after Golem, Betsy's Wings. Wings start in Hardmode: most are crafted at a Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil from 20 Souls of Flight, which Wyverns drop high in the sky. The only pre-Hardmode pair, the Fledgling Wings, flies for 0.42 seconds.
How Wings Work in Terraria
Wings are accessories: hold Jump to fly, with better mid-air control and no fall damage, one pair at a time. Five things decide how good a pair is:
- Flight time runs down while you fly and resets when you stand, climb a rope or hook onto a block. At zero, keep holding Jump to glide: gravity and your top fall speed drop to a third.
- Horizontal speed is your top speed in mid-air, unless a sprinting accessory gives you more. Some pairs also multiply your horizontal acceleration.
- Vertical speed multiplier multiplies your jump speed, and the result is how fast you climb. That is why jump boosts make every pair better.
- Hover: eight pairs hold a fixed height while you hold Down and Jump (the settings can turn this into a toggle). Six of them, the Hoverboard, Betsy's Wings, Nebula Mantle, Vortex Booster, Celestial Starboard and Lazure's Barrier Platform, use flight time at half the rate while you hover without pressing left or right.
- Upward boost: the Jetpack, Empress Wings and Celestial Starboard boost your climb while you hold Up. The Jetpack then burns flight time twice as fast; the Starboard accelerates harder but tops out at a lower climbing speed, so the wiki says to hold Up only for a moment after takeoff.
Terraria Wings Ranked by Stats
This table sorts every pair by the wiki's numbers: first the vertical speed multiplier, then flight time, then horizontal speed. Pairs with identical stats share a row. Speeds are the wiki's mph figures, with the hovering speed in brackets.
| # | Wings | Flight time | Horizontal speed | Climb | Extras | Earliest |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Celestial Starboard | 3 s | 41 mph (82) | 4.5× | Hover, upward boost; Expert and Master only | After the Moon Lord |
| 2 | Solar Wings, Stardust Wings | 3 s | 46 mph | 3× | 2.5× acceleration | After the Moon Lord |
| 3 | Empress Wings | 2.5 s | 41 mph | 2.75× | Upward boost, 2× acceleration | After Plantera |
| 4 | Fishron Wings | 3 s | 41 mph | 2.5× | No movement penalty in liquids, 2× acceleration | Hardmode, a post-Golem fight |
| 5 | Betsy's Wings | 2.5 s | 36 mph (61) | 2.5× | Hover, 2.5× acceleration | After Golem |
| 6 | Nebula Mantle, Vortex Booster | 3 s | 33 mph (61) | 2.45× | Hover | After the Moon Lord |
| 7 | Steampunk, Spooky, Tattered Fairy and Festive Wings | 3 s | 38 mph | 1.805× | After Plantera (Steampunk: Golem) | |
| 8 | Bone, Mothron, Spectre and Beetle Wings | 2.83 s | 38 mph | 1.66× | After Plantera (Beetle: Golem) | |
| 9 | Hoverboard | 2.83 s | 33 mph (51) | 1.66× | Hover | After Plantera |
| 10 | Leaf, Bat, Bee, Butterfly and Flame Wings | 2.67 s | 38 mph | 1.5× | After a mechanical boss (Leaf: Plantera) | |
| 11 | Chippy's Cloak, Heroicis' Wings, developer wings | 2.5 s | 36 mph | 1.5× | Developer wings: Expert and Master only, three hover | After a mechanical boss |
| 12 | Jetpack | 2.5 s | 33 mph | 1.5× (3× boosting) | Upward boost | After a mechanical boss |
| 13 | Fairy, Frozen, Harpy and Fin Wings | 2.17 s | 35 mph | 1.5× | Hardmode | |
| 14 | Angel Wings, Demon Wings | 1.67 s | 32 mph | 1.5× | Hardmode | |
| 15 | Fledgling Wings | 0.42 s | 15 mph | 1.5× | No horizontal speed boost | Pre-Hardmode |
Three things the table does not show on its own:
- Ranks 3 and 4 are a trade. Empress Wings climb faster and boost, Fishron Wings fly half a second longer. In Expert and Master the Empress of Light's Treasure Bag always holds the Soaring Insignia, which gives wings infinite flight time, so that half second stops mattering.
- Hover pairs rank by normal flight here. Hovering, the Nebula Mantle, Vortex Booster and Betsy's Wings reach 61 mph with 12× acceleration, the Starboard 82 mph with 16×. The wiki says the Starboard supersedes all four lunar pairs.
- Steampunk Wings are the only 3-second pair you simply buy.
How to Get Every Pair of Wings, by Stage
Every crafted pair below, except the four lunar ones, also needs 20 Souls of Flight and a Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil. Wyverns drop 5 to 10 each in Classic and 10 to 20 in Expert, and only spawn in Hardmode, high up in Space. The stages follow our boss order guide.
Before Hardmode
Only the Fledgling Wings: a 1 in 40 extra item in Skyware Chests on Floating Islands, Sky Crates and Azure Crates, and new Journey Mode characters start with a pair. At 0.42 seconds of flight, the wiki says a Cloud in a Bottle or Spectre Boots give similar mobility and are far more common.
Early Hardmode
| Wings | Recipe or source |
|---|---|
| Angel Wings | 10 Feathers, 15 Souls of Light |
| Demon Wings | 10 Feathers, 15 Souls of Night |
| Fairy Wings | 99 Pixie Dust (Pixies always drop 1 to 3) |
| Frozen Wings | 1 Ice Feather (1 in 3 from Ice Golems, which appear during a Blizzard in the Snow biome) |
| Harpy Wings | 1 Giant Harpy Feather (1 in 150 from Harpies) |
| Fin Wings | Angler quest reward, 1 in 70, Hardmode only, "obtainable after completing the 11th quest" |
Best pick: Fairy Wings or Frozen Wings, at 2.17 seconds against 1.67 for Angel and Demon Wings. Pixies always drop Pixie Dust, and an Ice Golem drops its feather 1 in 3 times, though Ice Golems are rare and only come out in Blizzards. Angel or Demon Wings are the cheap stopgap. If your group can beat Duke Fishron, skip ahead: use a Truffle Worm, a rare Hardmode critter of the underground Glowing Mushroom biome, as bait in the Ocean. The wiki says he can be fought from the start of Hardmode but is "on par with that of a post-Golem boss". His wings drop 1 in 15, or 1 in 10 from his Treasure Bag.
After a Mechanical Boss
| Wings | Recipe or source |
|---|---|
| Bee Wings | Tattered Bee Wing (1 in 100 from Moss Hornets) |
| Butterfly Wings | Butterfly Dust (half of all Moths drop it, but Moths are rare in the Underground Jungle) |
| Flame Wings | Fire Feather (1 in 50 from Red Devils in the Underworld) |
| Bat Wings | Broken Bat Wing (1 in 40 from Vampires during a Solar Eclipse) |
| Jetpack | The Steampunker sells it for 40 Gold from the new moon to the waxing gibbous |
| Chippy's Cloak, Heroicis' Wings | Their inactive version, 12 Hallowed Bars |
| Developer wings | Expert and Master: a Hardmode boss's Treasure Bag (not Queen Slime's) has a 1 in 16 chance to hold a random developer set |
The Tattered Bee Wing, Butterfly Dust and Fire Feather only drop once a mechanical boss is down, Solar Eclipses only start happening after one, and the Steampunker moves in after one.
Best pick: Bee, Butterfly, Flame or Bat Wings, all 2.67 seconds and 38 mph, so take whichever material drops first. The Jetpack is the pair you can buy and the fastest climber with its boost, but the slowest here sideways.
Chippy's Cloak and Heroicis' Wings came with 1.4.5.0. The inactive cloak drops from the Red Hat Skeletron, summoned by sitting on Chippy's Couch (1 in 7 from Skeletron) at night with the Clothier Voodoo Doll equipped and the Clothier nearby. The inactive Heroicis' Wings appear when you throw a Platinum Coin into a pool in the Desert. Both rank below the 2.67-second pairs, so craft them for the looks.
After Plantera
| Wings | Recipe or source |
|---|---|
| Leaf Wings | The Witch Doctor sells them for 1 Platinum 50 Gold, in the Jungle at night |
| Spectre Wings | 10 Spectre Bars (Chlorophyte Bars and Ectoplasm at an Adamantite or Titanium Forge) |
| Hoverboard | 18 Shroomite Bars (made at the Autohammer, which the Truffle sells after Plantera) |
| Bone Wings | Bone Feather (1 in 300 from Armored Bones in the Dungeon) |
| Mothron Wings | Mothron during a Solar Eclipse: 5% in Classic, 9.75% in Expert |
| Spooky Wings | Spooky Twig (Mourning Wood, Pumpkin Moon) |
| Tattered Fairy Wings | Black Fairy Dust (Pumpking, Pumpkin Moon) |
| Festive Wings | Everscream, Frost Moon |
| Empress Wings | Empress of Light: 1 in 15, or 1 in 10 from her Treasure Bag |
Best pick: Empress Wings if you can get them. She appears when you kill a Prismatic Lacewing in the surface Hallow between dusk and midnight. For a surer route, run the Pumpkin Moon: Spooky Wings and Tattered Fairy Wings fly for 3 seconds, and the Twig and the Dust drop more often in later waves. Leaf Wings are a guaranteed buy but stay at 2.67 seconds.
After Golem
| Wings | Recipe or source |
|---|---|
| Beetle Wings | 8 Beetle Husks (Golem drops 4 to 8, his Treasure Bag 18 to 23) |
| Steampunk Wings | The Steampunker sells them for 3 Platinum |
| Betsy's Wings | Betsy, 1 in 4, in the final wave of the Old One's Army at tier 3 |
Best pick: Steampunk Wings for 3 seconds without farming, or Betsy's Wings if you want to hover.
After the Moon Lord
| Wings | Recipe or source |
|---|---|
| Solar Wings, Stardust Wings, Nebula Mantle, Vortex Booster | 14 fragments from the matching Celestial Pillar and 10 Luminite Bars at the Ancient Manipulator, which the Lunatic Cultist always drops |
| Celestial Starboard | Always in the Moon Lord's Treasure Bag, Expert and Master only |
Best pick: the Celestial Starboard in Expert or Master. In Classic, Solar or Stardust Wings for normal flight, Nebula Mantle or Vortex Booster if you want to hover. The Moon Lord drops 70 to 90 Luminite, 90 to 110 from his bag.
How to Make Any Wings Fly Further
From the wiki's notes and tips:
- Rocket Boots and their upgrades add 42 ticks (0.7 seconds) of flight time.
- Balloons add 30% jump speed and the Frog Leg line 32%, and your climb is jump speed times the wing multiplier.
- The Soaring Insignia (Expert and Master, Empress of Light) gives wings and Rocket Boots infinite flight time and faster acceleration.
- Extra jumps combine well with wings, but the Sandstorm in a Bottle loses its sideways boost with wings on, so the wiki prefers the Blizzard in a Bottle or Fart in a Jar.
- Shimmer decrafts old wings back into their Souls of Flight for the next pair. Our Shimmer guide shows where to find it.
Wings on a Multiplayer Server
Every player rolls their own boss drops. In Expert and Master, each player who damages a boss gets a Treasure Bag with its own chance at Empress Wings, Fishron Wings or a developer set. Bags are client-side and vanish when you leave the world, so pick yours up before you log off.
Farm Wyverns away from town. They do not spawn with town NPCs nearby (a 240 by 150 tile area around you) or while you stand in front of a safe background wall, which includes nearly every wall players place. A Shadow Candle lifts both limits, and a Water Candle gives Wyverns an extra spawn attempt that the wiki says nearly doubles their spawn chance.
Modded worlds miss the newest wings. Stable tModLoader is still based on Terraria 1.4.4.9 content (tModLoader status), so the four pairs added in 1.4.5.0, Chippy's Cloak, Heroicis' Wings, Kazzymodus' Wings and Luna's Runic Pixie Wings, are not in a tModLoader world. If your group keeps one world online on a rented server, Space-Node's Terraria hosting switches between vanilla Terraria and tModLoader from the panel without touching your world files.
FAQ
What are the best wings in Terraria? The Celestial Starboard, Expert and Master only, from the Moon Lord's Treasure Bag. In Classic, the Solar Wings and Stardust Wings top the wiki's stats.
What are the best early Hardmode wings in Terraria? Fairy Wings or Frozen Wings (2.17 seconds) before any mechanical boss, then Bee, Butterfly, Flame or Bat Wings (2.67 seconds). Fishron Wings beat them all if you can defeat Duke Fishron that early.
Can you get wings before Hardmode in Terraria? Only the Fledgling Wings, from Skyware Chests, Sky Crates and Azure Crates (1 in 40) or as Journey Mode starting gear.
How many wings are there in Terraria? The wiki counts 51 wing types, 19 of them developer items and one a streamer item, Chippy's Cloak. Four were added in 1.4.5.0.
How do you hover with wings in Terraria? Wear a pair that hovers, such as the Hoverboard, Betsy's Wings, Nebula Mantle, Vortex Booster or Celestial Starboard, and hold Down and Jump while flying. With Hover Controls set to Click, Down turns hovering on and Up turns it off.
Can you wear two pairs of wings in Terraria? No, only one set of wings at a time. Rocket Boots, balloons and the Soaring Insignia stack with them instead.
