You want to know what to wear and what to fight with at each stage of Terraria, for the class you play. That answer changed this year: 1.4.5, Bigger and Boulder, came out on 27 January 2026, and the 1.4.5.7 hotfix of 19 August reworked weapons, added accessory combinations and brought whip stacking back. This guide follows the official Terraria Wiki's Guide:Class setups, last edited on 31 October 2026 with 1.4.5.8 as the current PC version, condensed into five stages per class.
Quick answer: Terraria has no class you pick at the start: your armor, accessories and weapons make you melee, ranged, mage or summoner. Use whatever hits hardest until the Wall of Flesh, then commit. In the wiki's class setups, melee goes from Molten armor and the Night's Edge to Turtle armor and True Excalibur, the Terra Blade after Plantera, and Solar Flare armor with the Zenith. Ranged goes from Necro armor through Chlorophyte and Shroomite to Vortex, with the Megashark, Phantasm and S.D.M.G. Mages go from Jungle or Meteor armor to Spectre and Nebula, ending on the Last Prism. Summoners go from Bee or Obsidian armor to Spider, Tiki and Stardust, with the Optic Staff, Terraprisma and Stardust Dragon Staff.
How Classes Work in Terraria
The wiki groups weapons by damage type, and armor and accessories boost one type or all of them. A class is a set of gear, not a choice you are stuck with.
- Melee has the best survivability and decent crowd control, but many weapons are short; later, melee weapons that fire projectiles take over.
- Ranged hits hard from a distance and keeps using up ammunition until you own an Endless Quiver or Endless Musket Pouch.
- Magic is fragile but varied, with homing, lifesteal and area damage, and slows down when mana runs out. Strong single-target spells come late.
- Summoner lets minions and sentries do the damage and uses whips to point them at a target. Its armor trades defense for damage.
Before the Wall of Flesh, use the strongest weapon you find. From early Hardmode, bonuses get big enough that it "is encouraged at this point to choose a class". Up to Plantera, "ranged provides the highest long-distance DPS, melee provides the best tanking ability, magic provides the most versatile weapon effects, and summoner provides the most effortless mob clearing." After Plantera the classes are "very balanced", the Terra Blade aside.
Every class can also run two minions and two sentries without summoner gear: a Bewitching Table from the Dungeon adds a minion slot, and a War Table from the Old One's Army adds a sentry slot.
Many items below are new. The Starcrash, Mushroom Staff, Cattiva, Foxparks and Strung Counterweight came with 1.4.5.0; the Clay Bud Staff, Ruinous Staff, Restoration Shield, Twilight Grasp, Ouroboros Ring, Chaos Cylinder, Pyroclastic Stone and Mystic Arts Sash with 1.4.5.7. Version 1.4.5.8 reached PC on 23 August 2026 and fixed problems with that content.
The stages follow the boss order: early pre-Hardmode is before Skeletron, pre-Wall of Flesh after it, Hardmode runs through the mechanical bosses to Plantera, post-Plantera through Golem and the Lunatic Cultist to the Moon Lord, and endgame comes after the Moon Lord.
Melee Setup by Stage
| Stage | Armor | Weapons | Accessories and buffs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early pre-Hardmode | Platinum or Gladiator armor | Starfury, Blade of Grass, Enchanted Sword | Feral Claws, White String; Strung Counterweight after the Goblin Army |
| Pre-Wall of Flesh | Molten armor | Night's Edge, Dark Lance, Cascade | Feral Claws, Strung Counterweight, Pyroclastic Stone |
| Hardmode | Adamantite Helmet, Frost Breastplate, Mythril Greaves; after the mechanical bosses Turtle armor, or a Hallowed or Chlorophyte Mask with Squire's Plating and Squire's Greaves | Bananarang, Chain Guillotines (Corruption) or Fetid Baghnakhs (Crimson); then True Excalibur, True Night's Edge, Death Sickle | Warrior Emblem, Berserker's Glove, later Mechanical Glove and Fire Gauntlet; Flask of Ichor or Cursed Flames |
| Post-Plantera | Hallowed Mask, Squire's Plating, Squire's Greaves; after Golem Valhalla Knight pieces or Beetle armor | Terra Blade, Vampire Knives (Crimson); after Golem Flying Dragon; Daybreak before the Moon Lord | Same set; Flask of Venom |
| Endgame | Solar Flare armor | Zenith, Meowmere, Star Wrath | Warrior Emblem, Mechanical Glove, Fire Gauntlet; Flask of Nanites |
- Squire's armor costs Defender Medals at the Tavernkeep. Without them, the guide says full Chlorophyte armor with the Mask works for an offensive set.
- The Terra Blade "is significantly affected by melee speed, so gloves should be used over emblems".
Ranged Setup by Stage
| Stage | Armor | Weapons | Accessories and ammo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early pre-Hardmode | Fossil armor | Boomstick, Blood Rain Bow, Minishark | Poison Barb, Harpy Charm; Frostburn Arrows, Silver Bullets |
| Pre-Wall of Flesh | Necro armor | Star Cannon, Phoenix Blaster, Quad-Barrel Shotgun, Hellwing Bow | Sweet Barb, Harpy Charm, Snapping Stone; Hellfire Arrows, Meteor Shot |
| Hardmode | Frost armor; later Chlorophyte or Hallowed armor with the Helmet | Daedalus Stormbow, Dart Rifle, Uzi; after the mechanical bosses Flamethrower, Chlorophyte Shotbow, Megashark | Ranger Emblem, Phoenix Quiver, Chaos Cylinder; Crystal Bullets, Ichor or Holy Arrows |
| Post-Plantera | Shroomite armor | Nail Gun, Sniper Rifle; after Golem Tsunami, Eventide, Xenopopper; Phantasm and Vortex Beater before the Moon Lord | Recon Scope, Sniper Scope, Chaos Cylinder; Chlorophyte Bullets, Venom Arrows |
| Endgame | Vortex armor | S.D.M.G. with Crystal Bullets, Phantasm with Ichor and Venom Arrows | Ranger Emblem, Recon Scope, Sniper Scope, Chaos Cylinder; Luminite Bullets and Arrows |
- The guide rates Crystal Bullets highest for single-target damage; Chlorophyte Bullets home in and Luminite Bullets pierce.
- Shroomite has three headpieces: the Headgear for bows and repeaters, the Mask for guns, the Helmet for specialist weapons.
- The Star Cannon burns Fallen Stars, so the wiki pairs it with Fossil armor for its ammo saving.
Terraria Mage Guide: Setup by Stage
| Stage | Armor | Weapons | Accessories and buffs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early pre-Hardmode | Jungle armor, or Wizard Hat, Mystic Robe, Jungle Pants | Wand of Sparking, then Demon Scythe, Thunder Zapper, gem staves | Nature's Gift, Celestial Cuffs; 9 Mana Crystals and the Arcane Crystal |
| Pre-Wall of Flesh | Jungle armor, or Meteor armor with the Gray Zapinator | Demon Scythe, Aqua Scepter, Gray Zapinator | Celestial Cuffs, Magnet Flower, Restoration Shield |
| Hardmode | Adamantite Headgear and Breastplate, Forbidden Treads; later Hallowed or Chlorophyte armor with the Headgear | Orange Zapinator, Spirit Flame, Life Drain (Crimson); after the mechanical bosses Unholy Trident, Venom Staff | Sorcerer Emblem, Mana Cloak, later Celestial Emblem; Crystal Ball |
| Post-Plantera | Spectre armor; Dark Artist armor before the Moon Lord | Leaf Blower, Inferno Fork; after Golem Razorblade Typhoon, Bubble Gun; Nebula Blaze before the Moon Lord | Celestial Emblem, Celestial Cuffs, Sorcerer Emblem, Mystic Arts Sash |
| Endgame | Nebula armor | Last Prism, Lunar Flare | Same set plus Mana Cloak, Restoration Shield |
- Mana first: the guide lists the Mana Crystals and the Arcane Crystal as permanent buffs with no downside to using early.
- Spectre armor has two headpieces: the guide uses the Mask for its general set and the Hood, whose bonus heals through lifesteal, for its defensive one.
- Magic gets weapons that "truly excel against single targets" only after Golem, such as the Razorblade Typhoon, a 1 in 7 drop from Duke Fishron.
Terraria Summoner Guide: Setup by Stage
| Stage | Armor | Minions, whips, sentries | Accessories and buffs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early pre-Hardmode | Flinx Fur Coat | Clay Bud Staff or Finch Staff, then Flinx Staff, Vampire Frog Staff, Cattiva; Snapthorn | Feral Claws; Summoning Potion |
| Pre-Wall of Flesh | Bee armor for minions, Obsidian armor for whip damage | Imp Staff with the Starcrash, or Mushroom Staff with the Spinal Tap, plus a Flinx and a Vampire Frog | Pygmy Necklace, Silver Shield; Bewitching Table, War Table |
| Hardmode | Spider armor; later Chlorophyte Visor or Hallowed Hood | Blade Staff with the Cool Whip, or Sanguine or Ruinous Staff with the Firecracker; after the mechanical bosses Optic Staff and Spider Staffs, Durendal | Summoner Emblem, Pygmy Necklace, Twilight Grasp, Druidic Serpent Cloak |
| Post-Plantera | Tiki armor; after Golem Spooky armor, or Valhalla Knight for defense | Desert Tiger Staff with Firecracker and Vulgar Display of Flower; after Golem Terraprisma, Xeno Staff, Kaleidoscope | Hercules Beetle, Papyrus Scarab, Necromantic Scroll, Ouroboros Ring |
| Endgame | Stardust armor, or Valhalla Knight for defense | Stardust Dragon Staff and Terraprisma with Possession and Constellation; Lunar Portal Staff | Papyrus Scarab, Necromantic Scroll, Twilight Grasp, Ouroboros Ring |
- Whip stacking is back since 1.4.5.7. You start with one tag effect slot; the Mobius Strip, Wicked Armlet and Silver Bracer add one each and the Twilight Grasp adds two. The Snake Band line, Ouroboros Ring and Druidic Serpent Cloak included, adds an extra swing at 30% damage after three whip attacks, with your next whip once you have a second tag effect slot. The guide says stacking helps "pure" summoners far more than hybrids.
- Whips send minions after the last enemy you hit. Against bosses that spawn small enemies, target the boss by hand and use another weapon.
- Queen Slime drops the Blade Staff (1 in 4 in a Classic world) and the Dreadnautilus the Sanguine Staff (1 in 2); the guide suggests another loadout for those fights.
- The Terraprisma drops when you beat the Empress of Light by day, when every attack she lands kills you.
Playing Classes Together on One Server
Pick the world evil with your class in mind. You choose Corruption or Crimson when you create a world. Unless you grow an artificial biome later, it decides between Chain Guillotines and Fetid Baghnakhs, and between the Flask of Cursed Flames and the Flask of Ichor, which the guide rates best in several stages. Vampire Knives stay Crimson-only even then.
Give the group a tank. The guide adds the Flesh Knuckles, 8 defense and 400 aggro, for a multiplayer tank. Turtle, Beetle and Solar Flare armor draw enemies the same way, sparing teammates with less defense.
Use Loadouts. Every character has three sets of armor and accessories from the start, so a summoner can keep one for Queen Slime.
If your group keeps one world online on a rented server, Space-Node's Terraria hosting runs vanilla Terraria or tModLoader, switchable from the panel. Our TShock guide covers admin commands for a vanilla world.
Calamity Class Setups
Calamity adds a fifth class, the Rogue, built on a Stealth mechanic and 155 weapons, says the Calamity Mod Wiki. That wiki keeps its own Guide:Class setups in Pre-Hardmode, Hardmode and Post-Moon Lord pages. Its header says it was written for Calamity 2.1.2, while the current update is 2.2.3, so check item pages.
Calamity's updates go to stable tModLoader, which "is based on Terraria v1.4.4 content", says its player guide, and in Re-Logic's October State of the Game the tModLoader team called its 1 November release one "for 1.4.4". Items new in 1.4.5, such as the Starcrash or Twilight Grasp, are not in a Calamity world. Our Calamity server guide covers versions, mods and world settings.
FAQ
What is the best class in Terraria? None outright. Before Plantera the wiki gives ranged the highest long-distance DPS, melee the best tanking, magic the most varied effects and summoner the easiest mob clearing. After Plantera it calls them very balanced, and after the Moon Lord the Zenith "kills everything easily regardless of what equipment you're wearing".
When should I pick a class in Terraria? After the Wall of Flesh. From early Hardmode the guide encourages you to specialize and to choose between an offensive and a defensive loadout.
Is summoner good in Terraria 1.4.5? The wiki gives it the most effortless mob clearing, and 1.4.5 added options: whip stacking with the Twilight Grasp and Ouroboros Ring, and staffs like the Mushroom Staff, Clay Bud Staff and Ruinous Staff. Minions also add damage next to any other class's weapon.
Can you switch classes in Terraria? Yes. Nothing locks you in, and the wiki says you "should strongly consider switching classes" when a strong weapon from another class drops. Loadouts make switching quick.
Will Terraria 1.4.6 change these class setups? Re-Logic presents 1.4.6 as Crossplay Phase One, which lets console players join by IP address. In its October 2026 State of the Game it was in final testing. Check the wiki's guide once it is out.
