Why Modded Minecraft Needs Special Hosting
Vanilla Minecraft is relatively light on resources. A basic server can run on 2GB of RAM with modest CPU power. Modded Minecraft is a completely different story.
Mods add blocks, entities, dimensions, AI behaviors, world generation, and processing logic that multiply the server's workload. A heavy modpack like ATM10, Better MC, or Vault Hunters can use 10 to 16GB of RAM and demands strong single-thread CPU performance.
Hardware Requirements by Modpack Size
Light Modpacks (Under 50 Mods)
RAM: 4GB minimum. CPU: Any modern processor. Storage: SSD minimum, NVMe preferred. Example packs: simple optimization packs, quality of life mods, small content additions.
Medium Modpacks (50 to 150 Mods)
RAM: 6 to 8GB. CPU: Modern processor with strong single-thread performance. Storage: NVMe strongly recommended. Example packs: Create, medium-sized kitchen sink packs.
Heavy Modpacks (150+ Mods)
RAM: 10 to 16GB. CPU: A modern high-clock CPU. Single thread performance is critical. Storage: NVMe required. HDD or SATA SSD will cause chunk loading delays. Example packs: ATM10, Better MC, RLCraft, Vault Hunters, Prominence II, large kitchen sink packs.
Why CPU Matters More Than RAM
Many new server owners focus on RAM and ignore CPU. This is a mistake. Once you have enough RAM for your modpack (check the modpack requirements), CPU becomes the bottleneck.
The main game loop of a Minecraft server runs on one thread. This means one fast CPU core is more valuable than many slower cores. High-clock desktop CPUs, such as AMD Ryzen 9 chips, are strong at single-thread work, which is why many Minecraft hosts use them.
The TPS (ticks per second) of your server is directly tied to how fast one CPU core can process the game loop. 20 TPS is the target. Drop below 18 and players notice lag. Below 15 and gameplay becomes frustrating.
Storage Impact on Modded Servers
Modded Minecraft creates heavy disk IO. World generation writes chunks to disk constantly. Mods that add dimensions multiply this further. Entity tracking, block updates, and player data all involve disk operations.
NVMe SSDs handle this IO smoothly. SATA SSDs are slower but workable. HDDs will cause noticeable chunk loading delays and can bottleneck your server during heavy world exploration.
Choosing the Right Host

Whichever host you pick, check the result on your own server. Install the pack, let players explore new terrain, and watch /forge tps or /neoforge tps together with a Spark profile.
