mcMMO RPG Plugin Setup Guide for Minecraft (2026)
mcMMO adds an RPG skill system to Minecraft. Players level up skills by performing related actions. Mining levels up by mining. Swords level up by fighting with swords. Each skill unlocks abilities and passive bonuses at higher levels.
Skills Overview
Combat Skills
- Swords: Bleed effect, counter-attack
- Axes: Critical strikes, armor impact, skull splitter
- Archery: Skill shot (damage boost), daze
- Unarmed: Disarm, iron arm (damage boost)
- Taming: Call of the wild, beast lore, gore
Gathering Skills
- Mining: Super breaker, double drops
- Woodcutting: Tree feller (chop whole tree), double drops
- Excavation: Giga drill breaker, treasure hunting
- Herbalism: Green terra, double drops from crops

- Repair: Repair items at iron blocks

Installation
- Download mcMMO from SpigotMC (premium) or use mcMMO Classic (free)

Balance Tips
mcMMO can become overpowered if not configured:
- Set level caps: 500 to 1000 is reasonable
- Reduce double drop rates: Default rates make diamonds too common at high levels
- Increase cooldowns: Prevent ability spam
- Disable overpowered abilities: Tree Feller on large jungle trees crashes servers
- XP curve: Make later levels require significantly more XP
Economy Integration
Use mcMMO with an economy for progression:
- Sell mcMMO experience in a shop
- Create skill reset tokens
- Offer XP boost items as rewards
- Set up mcMMO leaderboards with prizes
PvP Considerations
mcMMO affects PvP significantly:
- Higher sword skill = more damage
- Axes can break armor
- Unarmed can disarm opponents
- Archery daze stuns players
Consider separate PvP arenas where mcMMO skills are disabled, or cap PvP-relevant skill levels.
Performance
mcMMO is lightweight but the database needs attention:
- Use MySQL for multi-server setups
- FlatFile works for single servers
- Purge inactive player data periodically
- Tree Feller and Super Breaker can cause lag spikes on busy servers
