You want to play DayZ with a friend on another platform, or you are about to rent a server for a group where one person plays on Steam, one on Xbox and one on a PS5. So is DayZ crossplay, and who can end up on the same server?
Quick answer: No, DayZ is not crossplay between Steam, Xbox and PlayStation. Each has its own servers and its own patch notes, and a PC server you rent from a host only takes Steam players. The one exception is DayZ on Windows through the Xbox app and PC Game Pass, on PC since 8 April 2026: that is the Xbox version of the game, so it plays with Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S players, but not with Steam. PlayStation players only play with PlayStation players. Checked on 3 November 2026.
Below is what Bohemia Interactive and the three stores say, what that means for a group on mixed platforms, and what a PC server gives you that a console server cannot. Everything comes from Bohemia's DayZ posts on Steam, the Steam, Xbox and PlayStation store listings and Xbox Wire, all opened on 3 November 2026.
Is DayZ crossplay? What Bohemia says
Bohemia's most direct answer is an old one. In its Status Report of 27 March 2018, before the console release, the team answered the question "Will there be cross-platform between platforms?" It called that "unlikely" and gave its reason: "while it's perfectly viable from the technology perspective, we'd rather not mix PC and console players because it would cause a noticeable disbalance in gameplay."
None of Bohemia's DayZ posts on Steam since then, up to the week-one Badlands post of 28 October 2026, announces crossplay between Steam, Xbox and PlayStation. Bohemia still writes about them as three platforms. The Badlands launch post of 15 October 2026 links separate patch notes for Steam, Xbox and PlayStation, and the week-one post says the Halloween event started "on Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox".
The store pages agree. The Steam listing has Online PvP and Online Co-op but not Steam's Cross-Platform Multiplayer label. The PlayStation Store page lists online play for up to 60 players with PS Plus and no cross-play notice. Only the Xbox store page lists "Xbox cross-platform multiplayer", and that label covers Xbox consoles and Windows PCs on the Xbox side, as the next sections explain.

Microsoft lists "Xbox Live Cross-Gen Multiplayer" for DayZ, so Xbox One and Series X|S players share servers. The PlayStation Store sells DayZ as a PS4 game and notes that it "is playable on PS5", so PS4 and PS5 players run the same game. On Steam, DayZ is a Windows game, and Valve rates it Unsupported on Steam Deck.
Is DayZ cross platform between PC and Xbox?
Yes, but only through the Xbox version on Windows, never through Steam. Xbox Wire listed "DayZ (PC)" for 8 April 2026, "Now on PC", in Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, Essential and PC Game Pass. The Xbox store page names PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Cloud Gaming and handhelds under "Play with", and lists "Xbox Play Anywhere" and "Xbox cross-platform multiplayer". Microsoft's Play Anywhere page explains the idea: one digital purchase that plays on "XBOX console, PC, and supported gaming handhelds", add-ons included.
Bohemia treats that Windows version as part of Xbox. The Xbox patch notes link in its Badlands launch post opens a forum thread for Xbox and the Microsoft Store together (its address ends in xboxmicrosoft-store-update-130).
What that means in practice:
- A Steam copy does not carry over. If you own DayZ on Steam and your friend plays on Xbox, you need the Xbox version on your PC, through PC Game Pass or a purchase in the Xbox app or Microsoft Store.
- You play on Xbox servers. No Steam Workshop, no DZSA Launcher and none of the modded community servers you know from Steam.
- Keyboard and mouse matter. Bohemia's 1.29 Road to Badlands Experimental post of 1 July 2026 mentions a firearm zeroing fix "on Xbox K&M servers", the Xbox servers for keyboard and mouse players. Bohemia's Steam posts do not spell out which Xbox servers the Windows version can join, so when a PC player and an Xbox player team up, start on one of the K&M servers.
PS4 and PS5: PlayStation players only
PlayStation has no link to any other platform. The PlayStation Store sells DayZ as a PS4 game that also runs on PS5, with "PS Plus required for online play" and support for up to 60 online players. Badlands came out on 15 October 2026, and DayZ Badlands is on the PlayStation Store with that release date, so PlayStation players have Nasdara too, but only with each other.
Why a PC community server cannot take console players
A PC community server runs the DayZ server software that the Steam version connects to. Only Steam players can join it, whatever its mods or map, and that is true wherever it runs: on your own machine or at a host. Our own DayZ servers are PC servers, so the same applies to them.
Consoles do have community servers of their own. Bohemia's 1.23 update post of 7 November 2023 talks about "console community servers", and its post of 22 December 2021 describes "consoles which can't benefit from modding", for which Bohemia "nurtured the ability of console users to modify gameplay experiences through server settings". So a console server can change settings and loot through its server files, but it cannot run Workshop mods, and it only takes players from its own platform.
What a mixed group can do
- Steam players and Xbox players. The Steam players switch to the Xbox version on Windows, and the whole group plays on Xbox servers. You give up Steam Workshop mods for as long as you play together.
- Anyone with a PlayStation player. There is no shared server. Everyone has to play on PlayStation, or the PlayStation player moves to PC or Xbox.
- Everyone on PC. Pick Steam. That gives you the full PC side of DayZ: official servers, community servers and a modded server of your own.
What a PC server gives your group
If everyone can play on Steam, a PC community server is where DayZ offers the most:
- Mods from the Steam Workshop, from traders and base building to large frameworks such as DayZ Expansion. Players load them and join through the DZSA Launcher: see the DZSA Launcher guide, the DayZ launcher and mods guide and the server mods worth running.
- Community maps such as Namalsk, Banov and Takistan Plus next to the four official maps, Chernarus, Livonia, Sakhal and Nasdara. The DayZ maps guide compares them, and the Nasdara map guide covers the Badlands map.
- Full control of the central economy: loot, spawn gear and events through types.xml and the other mission files. A console community server can change its settings and files too, but without mods.

Will DayZ get full crossplay?
Bohemia has not announced it. The 2018 answer is still the only direct answer in its Steam posts, and its plans for the year in the 1.29 post of 8 April 2026 (Badlands, server stability, better modding tools and the seasonal events) do not mention crossplay. Bohemia posts every update and event in its DayZ news on Steam, so that is the place to watch.

Is DayZ crossplay between PC and PS5? No. PlayStation players only play with other PlayStation players, on PS4 or PS5. Neither the Steam version nor the Xbox version on Windows can join them.
Is DayZ cross platform between Xbox and PlayStation? No. Xbox and PlayStation have separate servers and separate patch notes, and Bohemia names them as separate platforms in its posts.
Can I play DayZ on PC with a friend on Xbox? Yes, if you play the Xbox version on Windows, through PC Game Pass, the Xbox app or the Microsoft Store, not Steam. You then play on Xbox servers without Steam Workshop mods. Bohemia mentions "Xbox K&M servers" for keyboard and mouse players, which is the natural place to start.
Do Xbox One and Series X|S players play together, and PS4 and PS5? Yes. Microsoft lists Xbox Live Cross-Gen Multiplayer for DayZ, and on PlayStation the PS4 version is the one PS5 players run.
Can console players join my modded PC server? No. A PC community server takes Steam players only, and Steam Workshop mods do not exist on console.
Will DayZ get crossplay? Bohemia has not announced it. In 2018 it called crossplay "unlikely" because mixing PC and console players would unbalance the game, and its 2026 plans do not mention it.
