Xbox Game Pass titles, Minecraft Bedrock Edition and many other Microsoft Store games depend on a background Windows app called Gaming Services.
If Gaming Services is broken, many games simply will not launch on your PC. Here is how to fix it.
What Are Gaming Services
Gaming Services is a Windows component that handles game installation, updates, and integration for Microsoft Store games and Xbox Game Pass titles. It runs in the background and manages game licenses, cloud saves, and multiplayer connectivity.
Without working Gaming Services, Minecraft Bedrock, Forza, Halo, and other Xbox/Microsoft games will not install or launch properly.
Common Gaming Services Problems
The most frequent issues include:
Games failing to install from the Microsoft Store. Minecraft Bedrock showing error codes on launch. Xbox app showing "Gaming Services is needed" messages. Games hanging on the loading screen. Installation progress stuck at 0%.
How to Fix Gaming Services
Method 1: Reset Through Settings
Open Windows Settings. Go to Apps and then Installed apps. Find Gaming Services. Click the three dots and select Advanced options. Click Reset. Restart your computer.
Method 2: Reinstall Through PowerShell
Open PowerShell as Administrator. Run this command to uninstall:
Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.GamingServices | Remove-AppxPackage -AllUsers
Then reinstall by running:
Start-Process ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN
Restart your computer after installation completes.
Method 3: Windows Store Reset
Sometimes the issue is with the Microsoft Store itself. Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run:
wsreset.exe
This clears the Store cache and can resolve installation issues.
Method 4: Check Windows Update
Outdated Windows versions can cause Gaming Services conflicts. Go to Settings, Windows Update, and install all available updates including optional ones.
Gaming Services for Minecraft
If Minecraft Bedrock Edition will not launch or install on Windows, Gaming Services is almost always the culprit.
After fixing Gaming Services using the methods above, Minecraft should install and launch normally. If you then want to host a Bedrock server for multiplayer, you will need a hosting provider.
