You restart your Rust server after a game update, SteamCMD scrolls past in the console, and one line stands out: Error! App '258550' state is 0x486 after update job. Then the server starts anyway, on the old build, and players on the new client can't connect. Several reports from October 2026 show the same pattern, and Rust's forced wipe on Thursday 5 November 2026 at 19:00 UTC brings the next wave of update restarts. Here are the fixes that worked in those reports, cheapest first.
Quick answer: "App state is 0x486 after update job" means SteamCMD's update job for app 258550 (Rust Dedicated Server) ended without installing the update. It often happens on the first start after a Rust update, right after SteamCMD has updated and restarted itself. Restart once more and look for Success! App '258550' fully installed. If the 0x486 line comes back, run the update with validate. If that fails too, move steamapps/appmanifest_258550.acf aside and run it with validate again. Reinstall Oxide or Carbon afterwards, because the update puts the vanilla files back. Valve does not document what 0x486 means.
What the 0x486 Error Looks Like
This is the log, shortened, from a Pterodactyl issue opened on 29 October 2026:
[----] Update complete, launching Steamcmd...
steamcmd.sh[10]: Restarting steamcmd by request...
...
Connecting anonymously to Steam Public...OK
Waiting for client config...OK
Waiting for user info...OK
Update state (0x3) reconfiguring, progress: 0.00 (0 / 0)
Update state (0x0) unknown, progress: 0.00 (0 / 0)
Error! App '258550' state is 0x486 after update job.
Unloading Steam API...OK
SteamCMD updated itself twice in that run, then the app_update 258550 that followed failed with progress 0 of 0. On the next restart SteamCMD was already current and the update succeeded. The reporter calls it "the known SteamCMD behaviour where the first app_update after a client self-update fails" and says it happens on most Rust update days.
Don't trust the exit code: after this error SteamCMD exited 0 in a Rust Docker image report and 8 in a Don't Starve Together panel and a Warfork deploy script. Only Success! App '258550' fully installed. means the update finished.
What Does State 0x486 Mean?
Valve does not explain these values. Its Steamworks upload guide names the app_status command and the appmanifest_<appid>.acf file as the places that show an app's install state, but lists no codes, and we found no Valve page that decodes 0x486. Community decodings exist; Valve has not confirmed them.
You can see the same value in the manifest. In the Don't Starve Together report, the manifest held "StateFlags" "1158", which is 0x486 written in decimal, with BytesDownloaded at 0 and a TargetBuildID newer than the installed buildid. After a successful validate run it read 4. Check yours (the paths match the commands below; on Pterodactyl the file is /home/container/steamapps/appmanifest_258550.acf):
grep -E '"(StateFlags|buildid|TargetBuildID|BytesDownloaded)"' ~/rust/steamapps/appmanifest_258550.acf
Fix 1: Restart Once More
On Pterodactyl, where the Rust image updates on every start unless AUTO_UPDATE is set to 0, restart the server from the panel and read the console for the Success! line before anyone joins. On your own Linux machine, with SteamCMD in ~/steamcmd and Rust in ~/rust:
cd ~/steamcmd
./steamcmd.sh +quit
./steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir ~/rust +login anonymous +app_update 258550 +quit
The +quit run lets SteamCMD finish updating itself first, as the Pterodactyl issue proposes for the image's start script.
Fix 2: Run the Update With Validate
If the same line comes back, stop the server and back up your server/<identity>/ folder and your oxide/ or carbon/ folder (backup guide). Then run:
cd ~/steamcmd
./steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir ~/rust +login anonymous +app_update 258550 validate +quit
Facepunch's own server guide installs Rust with this command. In the Don't Starve Together report, plain retries failed every time, and one run with validate ended with Success! on the new build. In a 7 Days to Die thread from December 2024, one admin fixed the same state for app 294420 with validate.
On Pterodactyl, the stock Rust egg's install script runs app_update with validate, so Settings > Reinstall Server does the same from the panel. The panel warns that "some files may be deleted or modified during this process", so back up first.
Fix 3: Move the Stale App Manifest Aside
In a Rust image fix merged on 24 October 2026, SteamCMD also printed Failed to get manifest request code, 'Access Denied'. A stale appmanifest plus leftover state in steamapps/downloading blocked the update there. Removing both and retrying fixed it on the production server; as the script's comment explains, SteamCMD then treats the existing files as a fresh install and checks them against the current manifests.
cd ~/rust/steamapps
mv appmanifest_258550.acf appmanifest_258550.acf.bak
rm -rf downloading temp
cd ~/steamcmd
./steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir ~/rust +login anonymous +app_update 258550 validate +quit
That image also deletes SteamCMD's cached appcache/appinfo.vdf and packageinfo.vdf, which SteamCMD downloads again. Our Valheim guide shows the same manifest fix for a related state. validate is no guarantee: a Warfork script that already used it still hit 0x486 on a first install, with no answer in that thread yet.
After any fix, install Oxide or Carbon again; our plugin update guide has the order.
Stop Your Start Script From Launching the Old Build
The stock Pterodactyl Rust image runs SteamCMD once without checking its output, downloads the newest Oxide or Carbon, and starts the server. The Docker image report shows where that can end. On 3 September 2026 two servers restarted for their wipe at the moment Facepunch's update rolled out, SteamCMD printed 0x486 and exited 0, and the script put the new Oxide build over the old Rust files. RustDedicated hung at boot with a MissingMethodException. A hang is not an exit, so the restart policy never fired, and the servers stayed down for five days.
The fix there: start only after SteamCMD's own success line. For your own script:
#!/bin/bash
cd ~/steamcmd
./steamcmd.sh +quit
updated=0
for i in 1 2 3; do
extra=""
[ "$i" -gt 1 ] && extra="validate"
./steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir ~/rust +login anonymous +app_update 258550 $extra +quit | tee /tmp/steamcmd.log
if grep -q "Success! App '258550' fully installed" /tmp/steamcmd.log; then
updated=1
break
fi
echo "SteamCMD update failed, retry $i of 3"
sleep 30
done
if [ "$updated" != 1 ]; then
echo "Rust update failed, not starting the old build"
exit 1
fi
# install Oxide or Carbon here, then start RustDedicated
Timing on Thursday 5 November
Facepunch's wipe timer page gives the monthly schedule as "First Thursday every month at 19:00 (London time)". London is on GMT in November, so that is 19:00 UTC. Don't schedule a restart for exactly 19:00: wait until the update is out, then stop, back up, update, check for the Success! line, and only then install Oxide or Carbon.
If your server runs on our Rust hosting and the console shows the 0x486 line, send us the console output by live chat, Discord or email. Support is online from 08:00 to 20:00 UTC, so the 19:00 UTC update falls in the last hour.
FAQ
What does "app state is 0x486 after update job" mean?
SteamCMD's update job ended without installing the update. Valve does not publish what the value stands for, so go by what fixed it in the reports: a second run, validate, or a moved app manifest.
Why does a second restart fix it?
In the Pterodactyl report, SteamCMD updated itself on the first start and the update after it failed. On the second start SteamCMD was already current, and app_update 258550 succeeded.
Can I ignore the error and start the server? No. You get the old build, and players on the new client can't connect. A framework that updates on start may also put a new Oxide on old Rust files, which hung two servers at boot in the September report.
Does validate delete my map or plugins?
Facepunch's guide warns that running SteamCMD reverts your files "back to vanilla", which is why Oxide or Carbon has to go back on afterwards. Your map and player data live in server/<identity>/. Back that folder up before you validate or reinstall.
Is this a Pterodactyl bug? Not only. The same state shows up with Docker images, a Don't Starve Together panel, a 7 Days to Die container and a Warfork script. What differs is whether the start script notices it.
