You found a few RuneScape Dragonwilds mods you like, maybe faster XP or dragon mounts, and you want them in your own game or on the dedicated server your group plays on. Before you copy files around, you need four answers: does Jagex allow it, where do the files go, does the server or every player need the mod, and what does a patch do to all of it. We checked Jagex's own pages and the mod pages on 3 November 2026, with the game on version 1.0.1.2.
Quick answer: Jagex allows RuneScape Dragonwilds mods under its Community Modding Guidelines, which ban paid mods and cheating in shared play, and plans official modding tools with an in-game mod browser on all platforms for the first half of 2027. Today there are two kinds of community mods for PC. Pak mods are .pak, .ucas and .utoc files that go in RSDragonwilds/Content/Paks/~mods. UE4SS mods go in RSDragonwilds/Binaries/Win64/ue4ss/Mods and need the UE4SS loader. On a dedicated server, the mod's own page tells you who needs it: some run from the server alone, others need the same version on the server and on every player's PC. UE4SS has no native Linux build, so UE4SS mods need a Windows server. After every patch, restart the server, check that it runs the same version as your players, and look for mod updates.
What Jagex allows
Jagex put it plainly in its July 2025 community update: "The TL;DR is that Modding is possible, supported and encouraged." The rules are in the RuneScape: Dragonwilds Community Modding Guidelines. They encourage quality-of-life mods, new items, areas and quests that don't break existing content, translations and unofficial fixes. They forbid:
- Paid mods: "Do not charge for mods, lock features behind paywalls, or solicit donations within the mod."
- Cheating where others play: "While single-player cheats are fine, using mods to cheat in multiplayer or any shared gameplay is prohibited."
- Mods made to ruin play for others, for example by crashing servers, corrupting saves or griefing multiplayer worlds.
- Overwriting or deleting original game files.
- Reuploads and "mod packs" that bundle other people's work without permission.
Jagex adds that this is a framework rather than a complete list, and that it "may take action at our discretion" against mods it finds harmful. The guidelines are written for mod makers, but two of them matter when you run a server. A mod that gives one player an advantage over the others on your server is the kind of shared-play cheating the guidelines rule out, so agree on mods with your group. And when your players need the same mods as the server, send them links to the mod pages instead of a zip with everyone's files.
Official support is on the way. Jagex's RuneFest 2026 summit post of 3 October says "Dedicated creation tools and an in-game mod browser and installer are coming to all platforms", planned for the first half of 2027 together with Song of Rebellion, Secure Servers and Leaderboards. Jagex has not explained yet what Secure Servers are or what they mean for community mods. CurseForge wrote on 8 October 2026 that it is "officially partnering with Jagex" on that support.
The two kinds of Dragonwilds mods
You find Dragonwilds mods on CurseForge and Nexus Mods. CurseForge listed 236 projects for the game on 3 November 2026, in five classes: Pak Mods, UE4SS Mods, RuneSchema Mods, Blueprints and Save Files. The class tells you how to install a mod.
| Pak mod | UE4SS mod | |
|---|---|---|
| Files | .pak, .ucas and .utoc with the same name | A mod folder, such as YieldSliders with its config.txt |
| Folder (Steam) | RSDragonwilds/Content/Paks/~mods | RSDragonwilds/Binaries/Win64/ue4ss/Mods |
| Needs | Nothing else | UE4SS in RSDragonwilds/Binaries/Win64 |
| Examples | Magic While Moving, More World Settings, Dragon Mounts | XP Sliders, Yield Sliders, Mini Map |
RuneSchema mods add a third layer. RuneSchema calls itself "A modding framework and authoring toolkit for RuneScape: Dragonwilds" and installs as a UE4SS mod in ue4ss/Mods/RuneSchema, so its content mods need both UE4SS and RuneSchema.
Install a pak mod on PC
- Close the game and back up your saves from
C:\Users\YOUR_NAME\AppData\Local\RSDragonwilds\Saved\SaveGames. - In Steam, right-click RuneScape: Dragonwilds, choose Manage, then Browse local files. Open
RSDragonwilds\Content\Paks. - Create a folder named
~modsif there isn't one. - Put the mod's
.pak,.ucasand.utocfiles straight into~mods, not into a subfolder, and keep the three together. - Start the game.
For PC Game Pass the mod pages give \XboxLibrary\RuneScape- Dragonwilds\Content\RSDragonwilds\Content\Paks\~mods instead. Keep the file names the way the author ships them: More World Settings, for example, ends up as ~mods\zMoreWorldSettings_P.pak next to its .ucas and .utoc.
Pak mods that change the same game data clash. Magic While Moving "patches every DA_Spell", Stack Size and Weight warns that "Any mod that modifies any item will conflict with this", and Better Linked Storage edits UserGame.ini, so it doesn't combine with other mods that edit that file. Read the compatibility note on each page before you stack mods.
Install UE4SS and a UE4SS mod on PC
- Download UE4SS. The XP Sliders and Yield Sliders pages point to the free "UE4SS for RSDragonwilds" page on Nexus Mods.
- Extract it into
RSDragonwilds\Binaries\Win64, next to the game's executable. That is the folder the UE4SS project names for its basic install. - Copy the mod's folder into
RSDragonwilds\Binaries\Win64\ue4ss\Mods\. Yield Sliders, for example, becomesue4ss\Mods\YieldSliders. - Start the game and load a world. Mods such as Yield Sliders add their settings to Esc > MODS if you also install Mod Menu.
On PC Game Pass the game sits under Binaries\WinGDK instead of Binaries\Win64, and the mod pages say to use "the BE version of UE4SS with the SCO signature, the normal build does not load there." To remove a UE4SS mod, delete its folder.
RuneScape Dragonwilds mods on a dedicated server
Who needs the mod: the server, the players or both
There is no general rule, so the mod page decides. The pages we checked fall into three groups:
- Server only. XP Sliders and Yield Sliders work on a dedicated server "when it is installed on the server", and "The server needs UE4SS running on it." A copy on a player's PC "does nothing on a server". You set the rates in
config.txtin the mod's folder on the server, and the mod picks up a change in about 10 seconds without a restart. - Server and every player. Dragon Mounts says: "The host, every joining player and any dedicated server must have the same game and mod versions installed." Its multiplayer support is "an experimental beta".
- Not stated. Magic While Moving, More World Settings and Stack Size and Weight don't say. Test a mod like that on a copy of your world before your group plays on it.
Some mods are risky on any server. Bigger Inventory warns "SERVERS DONT SEEM TO LIKE INVENTORY MODS ON PLAYERS" and mentions crashes for players on a dedicated server.
Linux or Windows server
Jagex's server guide says the dedicated server runs on 64-bit Windows and Linux. The community Pterodactyl egg starts the Linux build from RSDragonwilds/Binaries/Linux. For mods, that choice matters:
- UE4SS mods need a Windows server. UE4SS loads through a Windows DLL (
dwmapi.dll) placed next to the game's executable, and its README says "Native Linux builds are not currently supported." XP Sliders and Yield Sliders were "Tested on the Windows dedicated server". There, UE4SS goes next to the server's real executable in its folder underRSDragonwilds\Binaries, not next to the small launcher in the install's root folder, and the mod folder goes in that folder'sue4ss\Mods. - Pak mods need no loader. They go in
RSDragonwilds/Content/Paks/~modsin the server's install. Mint Servers' guide of 14 September 2026 (checked 3 November 2026), written for servers that run the Linux build, says the server loads pak mods "without any extra framework" and that a UE4SS mod "cannot load on the server at all".
On a self-hosted Linux server installed in /opt/dragonwilds, as in our Dragonwilds dedicated server setup guide, stop the server first, then:
cp -r /opt/dragonwilds/RSDragonwilds/Saved/SaveGames ~/dragonwilds-saves-$(date +%F)
mkdir -p '/opt/dragonwilds/RSDragonwilds/Content/Paks/~mods'
cp zMoreWorldSettings_P.pak zMoreWorldSettings_P.ucas zMoreWorldSettings_P.utoc \
'/opt/dragonwilds/RSDragonwilds/Content/Paks/~mods/'
Use the saves folder name your server actually created (SaveGames or Savegames), because Linux paths are case sensitive. The quotes are a habit worth keeping: typed on its own, as in cd ~mods, the shell tries to read ~mods as the home folder of a user called mods. Start the server again and read the log in RSDragonwilds/Saved/Logs if it doesn't come up. On a game panel such as Pterodactyl it is the same job in the file manager: stop the server, open RSDragonwilds/Content/Paks, create ~mods, upload the three files and start the server.
Our Dragonwilds server hosting runs Jagex's Linux server in the Netherlands, so the Linux limits above apply there too. If a mod is the reason you want a server, ask our support before you order: we answer from 08:00 to 20:00 UTC by live chat, Discord and email.
Console players and crossplay
Consoles can join a modded dedicated server. Jagex's 1.0.0.5 notes fixed "an issue where joining a modded Dedicated Server from consoles would corrupt a player save". Console players can't install community mods, though: those are PC files, and Jagex's in-game mod browser for all platforms is planned for the first half of 2027. A mod that every player must have, like Dragon Mounts, can't work for them, so if your group mixes PC and console, keep to mods that run from the server alone.
After every patch
Jagex has posted notes for six patches since 1.0 launched on 15 September 2026, the latest being 1.0.1 on 14 October and hotfix 1.0.1.2 on 23 October. The 1.0.1.2 notes open with "Dedicated Servers will need to be restarted to apply the hotfix." The server guide adds that the server must run the same version as the game: if your world disappears from the list, compare the version at the top of the server log with the one in the top left corner of the game. Jagex has promised news on 1.0.2, and Luminance is "our December update", so more patches are coming.
Each of those can break a mod, or a mod can stop the server from starting. A routine that covers both:
- Back up
RSDragonwilds/Saved/SaveGamesbefore the update reaches your server. The official wiki's dedicated server page calls that "very important". - Restart the server so it installs the update. The Pterodactyl egg does this on every start while its Automatic Updates variable is on, which is the default; a self-hosted server needs the SteamCMD
app_update 4019830command you installed it with. - Check the mod pages. Authors note the version they built for: Magic While Moving says "Updated for 1.0.1", and Dragon Mounts was tested solo on 1.0.1.1.
- If the server won't start or the world is missing, move the files from
~mods(and the mod folders fromue4ss/Mods) to a folder outside the game install, then start the server again. - Put mods back one at a time as their authors update them, and start the server after each one.
Turning updates off to protect your mods only works until your players' games update, because the server has to match their version. Removing a mod has its own risk. Bigger Inventory warns that removing any mod that increases inventory size can corrupt player saves, and advises keeping it for a whole playthrough or emptying the extra slots first. Dragon Mounts says characters with saved mounts "may fail to load" without it and links a save cleaner. Back up first, and ask your players to back up their own saves too.
FAQ
Does RuneScape Dragonwilds support mods? Yes. Jagex calls modding "possible, supported and encouraged" and sets the rules in its Community Modding Guidelines. Today's mods are community-made PC files; official tools with an in-game mod browser on all platforms are planned for the first half of 2027.
Where do I put Dragonwilds mods?
Pak mods (.pak, .ucas and .utoc) go in RSDragonwilds/Content/Paks/~mods; create the folder if it's missing. UE4SS mods go in RSDragonwilds/Binaries/Win64/ue4ss/Mods, after you install UE4SS in Binaries/Win64.
Do my friends need the same mods to join my server? Only if the mod page says so. XP Sliders and Yield Sliders run from the server alone; Dragon Mounts needs the same mod version on the server and on every player's PC. When a page doesn't say, test on a copy of your world.
Do Dragonwilds mods work on a Linux dedicated server?
Pak mods go in the server's ~mods folder and need no loader. UE4SS mods don't run there: UE4SS has no native Linux build, so they need a Windows dedicated server.
Can console players join a modded Dragonwilds server? Yes. Jagex fixed a save corruption bug for exactly that case in 1.0.0.5. Console players can't install mods themselves, so mods that every player needs won't work for them.
Will an update break my Dragonwilds mods? It can. Back up your saves, restart the server to update it, check each mod page for a new version, and move mods out of the install if the server won't start.
