Dododex ARK Taming Calculator: Server Settings Guide

Dododex is one of the most useful tools ARK players have. It tells you how much kibble, narcotics, time, and damage a tame will need. But for private server owners, the important detail is this: Dododex is only accurate when its rates match your server rates.
If you run boosted taming, faster food drain, custom breeding, or modded creatures, you need to think about how those settings affect player expectations.
Why taming calculators matter on private servers
Players plan around calculators. If Dododex says a tame takes 30 minutes and your server settings make it take 6 minutes, that is not a problem as long as players know the rates. If your settings are inconsistent or undocumented, players waste kibble, darts, traps, and time.
A good ARK server should make its rates easy to understand:
- Taming speed
- Dino food drain
- Harvesting
- XP
- Mating interval
- Egg hatch speed
- Baby maturation
- Imprint interval
Publish those in Discord, the server name, or your website so players can set Dododex correctly.
The settings Dododex users need
The main taming settings are TamingSpeedMultiplier and DinoCharacterFoodDrainMultiplier. Taming speed changes how quickly taming progresses. Food drain changes how quickly the creature gets hungry, which affects how often it eats.
If you boost taming speed without considering food drain, some tames can feel strange: they may finish too quickly, consume less food than expected, or make kibble tiers feel less meaningful.
Good rate ranges
For a casual PvE server, 3x to 5x taming is common. It keeps the game moving without deleting progression. For small friend groups, 5x can feel great. For PvP, be more careful: extremely fast taming can make losses feel meaningless and flood the server with powerful dinos.
A sensible starting point:
| Server style | Taming speed | Breeding speed |
|---|---|---|
| Vanilla-like | 1x-2x | 1x-2x |
| Casual PvE | 3x-5x | 5x-15x |
| Fast private server | 5x-10x | 15x-50x |
| PvP community | 2x-4x | Carefully tested |
These are not universal rules. They are starting points. The right rates depend on wipe length, tribe size, mods, and how much time your players have.
Breeding and imprinting
Taming is only the first half of the calculator story. Breeding rates can break balance faster than taming rates. If babies mature too quickly but imprint intervals are not adjusted, players can miss imprints or get awkward timing windows.
Test the full loop:
- Breed a common dino.
- Hatch or birth it.
- Try to imprint it.
- Check whether the timing feels fair.
- Adjust maturation and cuddle interval together.
ASA and CurseForge mods
ARK: Survival Ascended moved modding to CurseForge, and many community servers use modded creatures or overhaul mods. Dododex may not cover every modded creature perfectly. For modded servers, test important creatures yourself and write a short server-specific taming note for players.
Hosting side
Your host should make rate tuning easy. You need full access to GameUserSettings.ini and Game.ini, safe restarts, backups before major changes, and enough RAM for the creature counts your rates encourage.
Our ARK hosting includes full config access, CurseForge mod support, automatic backups, and plans that scale from small vanilla maps to cluster-ready servers.
Bottom line
Dododex is accurate when your rates are accurate. Publish your settings, test breeding and imprinting together, and avoid boosting rates so far that progression loses meaning. A good private ARK server is not just faster than official; it is tuned on purpose.
