Berry mutations are one of the most rewarding farming mechanics in Cobblemon. You plant two compatible berry trees next to each other, harvest them, and sometimes get a completely different berry out of it. Some of the strongest held items in battle (Enigma Berry, Custap Berry, Starf Berry) can only be obtained through mutation chains. This guide covers every mutation combination, the farming setup that actually works, and how to get the most out of berries on a multiplayer server.
How Berry Mutations Work in Cobblemon
Plant two specific berry trees adjacent to each other on farmland. They must be directly next to each other horizontally or vertically. Diagonal placement does not count. When you harvest either tree, there is a 12.5% base chance that the harvest produces the mutated berry instead of the normal one.
That means roughly 1 in 8 harvests triggers a mutation. You can boost this rate with Surprise Mulch, which increases mutation probability for 3 harvests after application.
Berry trees grow through four stages. The final stage produces flowers that turn into harvestable berries. After picking, the tree replenishes over time (typically 20 to 25 minutes depending on the berry), so you can harvest the same tree multiple times without replanting.
Every Berry Mutation Combination
Below is the full list of 40 mutation recipes. "Parent A + Parent B" means those two trees must be adjacent when you harvest.

How to Set Up a Berry Farm
The actual layout is straightforward. Here is what works:
- Till farmland where you want your trees.
- Plant Parent A and Parent B directly next to each other (north/south/east/west, not diagonal).
- Apply mulch at Stage 0 (right after planting) if you want yield or mutation bonuses.
- Wait for the trees to grow through all four stages. Growth time varies per berry type, generally between 60 and 120 minutes to full maturity.
- Harvest and check the result. If the mutation did not trigger, the berries replenish in 20 to 25 minutes for another attempt.
You can build rows of alternating parent pairs. A good layout for mass farming is a long row like: A B A B A B, where every B is adjacent to two A trees. This doubles your mutation chances per B tree since it touches two valid partners.
Mulch for Faster and Better Results
Mulch is crafted from a Mulch base (Bone Meal + Rotten Flesh + Dirt + Paper) combined with a second ingredient:
| Mulch | Recipe Addition | What It Does |
|---|---|---|
| Growth Mulch | Bone Meal + Mulch | Speeds up growth for 3 harvests |
| Rich Mulch | Blaze Powder + Mulch | Increases berry yield for 3 harvests |
| Surprise Mulch | Glistering Melon Slice + Mulch | Boosts mutation chance for 3 harvests |
| Loamy Mulch | Dirt + Mulch | Simulates Plains biome (permanent) |
| Coarse Mulch | Coarse Dirt + Mulch | Simulates Mountains/Taiga (permanent) |
| Peat Mulch | Moss Block + Mulch | Simulates Forest (permanent) |
| Humid Mulch | Mud + Mulch | Simulates Jungle/Swamp (permanent) |
| Sandy Mulch | Sand + Mulch | Simulates Arid/Desert (permanent) |
Surprise Mulch is the most important one for mutations. Apply it right after planting to get 3 harvests with a higher mutation chance. Biome mulches are permanent until removed with a shovel, so you only need to apply them once per tree.
Each berry has a preferred mulch/biome type. Planting in the right biome (or applying the matching biome mulch) either guarantees an extra berry or gives a chance at 1 to 2 bonus berries per harvest.
Best Berries for Competitive Battles
Not all berries are equal. If you are building a competitive team, focus your mutation farms on these:
Sitrus Berry (Lum + any HP-restore berry). Recovers 1/4 max HP at half health. The single most popular held berry in competitive play. Consistent, no drawback.
Lum Berry (Oran + status cure berry). Cures any status condition once. Great on setup sweepers who hate getting paralyzed or burned mid-boost.
Enigma Berry (Hopo + any type-resistance berry). Recovers 1/4 HP after a super effective hit. Rewards bulky Pokemon that can tank a weakness hit and stay in.
Custap Berry (Watmel + Chilan). Lets your Pokemon move first when it drops to 1/4 HP. A favorite on suicide leads and Sturdy users.
Starf Berry (Pomeg + EV reducer or Leppa). Raises a random stat by 2 stages at 1/4 HP. High variance, but devastating when it lands on the right stat.
Kee Berry (Kasib + Kee). Boosts Defense after taking a physical hit. Useful on physically bulky Pokemon that want to snowball.
Maranga Berry (Enigma + Wacan). Same idea but for Special Defense after a special hit.
Liechi, Ganlon, Petaya, Apicot, Salac (EV reducer + itself). Each raises one specific stat at 1/4 HP. Predictable and strong on the right Pokemon.
EV-Reducing Berries for Training
If you are resetting EVs on a Pokemon, you need:
| Berry | Reduces |
|---|---|
| Pomeg | HP EVs |
| Kelpsy | Attack EVs |
| Qualot | Defense EVs |
| Hondew | Sp. Attack EVs |
| Grepa | Sp. Defense EVs |
| Tamato | Speed EVs |
Each one lowers the stat's EVs by 10 per use and raises friendship. You will go through a lot of these on a competitive server, so keep a dedicated farm for each.
Berry Farming on a Dedicated Server vs. Singleplayer
In singleplayer, berry growth only ticks while you are in the world. Close the game and nothing grows. Your farm produces berries only during active play sessions.
On a dedicated server, berry trees keep growing 24/7 as long as the server is running and the chunks stay loaded. This changes everything about farming efficiency:
- Overnight growth. Plant before logging off, harvest mutations in the morning.
- Shared farms. Multiple players can contribute parents and harvest together, running more attempts per hour than any solo player.
- Chunk loading. Use chunk loaders or stay near spawn to keep your farm ticking. If the chunks unload, growth pauses until someone walks back into range.
- Community berry markets. Servers often set up trading posts where players swap rare mutations. This only works with the steady supply a dedicated server provides.
- Protected plots. Server plugins like GriefPrevention or claim mods keep your farm safe from other players. In singleplayer you do not need this, but on a public server it matters.
The 12.5% mutation rate sounds low, but on a server that runs around the clock, you get many more harvest cycles per day. A berry that replenishes every 20 minutes gives you 72 attempts in a 24-hour window per tree pair, compared to maybe 10 to 15 in a typical singleplayer session.
For server owners: berry farms with many trees in a small area are not heavy on performance. They are far lighter than mob farms or Pokemon spawn areas. You do not need to restrict them unless players are building hundreds of trees in a single chunk.
Host a Cobblemon Server on Space-Node
A Cobblemon server needs a host that handles modded Minecraft well. Entity-heavy mods like Cobblemon put extra load on the CPU, and you want fast storage so the world loads smoothly as players explore.
Space-Node runs AMD Ryzen 9000-series processors on Premium plans and Ryzen 7950X3D (USA) or Ryzen 9 3900X-class (other regions) on Budget plans. Every plan includes NVMe storage and DDoS protection. Matching common Cobblemon server sizes to Budget pricing on the Minecraft hosting page:
- MC Diamond (8 GB DDR4, EUR 7.20/month): Fits a private Cobblemon server for around 10 players.
- MC Special 1 (12 GB DDR4, EUR 10.80/month): Room for 10 to 25 players, or fewer players with extra addons like Cobblemon Additions or trainer packs.
- MC Special 3 (16 GB DDR4, EUR 14.40/month): Public servers past 25 players.
Pick your region in the plan selector before checkout. Nine regions are available: Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Canada, USA California, USA Virginia, Singapore, India, and Australia.
