Valheim's world generation system creates a unique map for every seed. With world generators and modifiers, you can preview seeds, customize generation parameters, and find the perfect world layout. Here is how to use these tools.
How Valheim World Generation Works
Every Valheim world generates from a text seed. The same seed always produces the same world layout, including biome placement, boss locations, the trader position, and terrain features. Change one letter in the seed and you get an entirely different world.
The world generates procedurally as players explore. Unexplored areas do not exist yet. Once generated, terrain is fixed unless modified by player building or world-editing tools.
Using a World Generator Tool
Web-based world generators let you preview any seed without launching the game:
- Open a Valheim world generator site
- Enter a seed (or generate a random one)
- The tool renders the full map showing all biomes
- Explore the map to evaluate the layout
- Check boss locations, trader position, and biome distribution
- Save good seeds for use in-game
These tools render the entire world instantly, saving you hours of sailing and exploring just to see the layout.
What to Look For in a Good World
When evaluating generated worlds:
Starting Area: A large Meadows biome near spawn with nearby Black Forest gives you room to build and access early game resources without long travel.
Biome Accessibility: All five main biomes (Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp, Mountain, Plains) should be reachable without extreme sailing distances. Compact worlds are easier to navigate.
Boss Altar Locations: Check that boss altars are spread reasonably. If all five are on different far-flung islands, progression involves more sailing than fighting.
Trader Position: Haldor the trader appears in a random Black Forest location. If he spawns on the far side of the map, reaching him early is difficult. Good seeds put him within reasonable distance of spawn.
Coastline and Islands: Worlds with a central continent and nearby islands offer the best experience. Worlds that are entirely fragmented into tiny islands make overland travel impossible.
World Modifiers (In-Game)
Valheim added official world modifiers that let you customize the experience when creating a new world:
Combat Modifiers:
- Adjust player damage dealt and received
- Modify enemy health and damage
- Change raid frequency and intensity
Resource Modifiers:
- Increase or decrease resource drop rates
- Modify portal restrictions
- Adjust stamina and health regeneration
Progression Modifiers:
- Skip boss progression requirements
- Unlock all recipes from the start
- Enable or disable certain game mechanics
These modifiers are set at world creation and apply to everyone playing that world.
Custom World Generation with Mods
Modded world generators go beyond what the base game offers:
- Better Continents: A mod that generates more realistic continent shapes, customizable ocean ratios, and specific biome placement rules
- World Generator mods: Allow you to define biome sizes, temperature patterns, and altitude distributions
- Flat world mods: Generate mostly flat terrain for building-focused servers
These require BepInEx and must be installed before generating the world. Once generated, the world works normally.
Using Seeds on Dedicated Servers
To use a specific seed on your dedicated server:
- Find or generate a good seed using a world generator tool
- In your server's world configuration, enter the seed string
- The server generates the world using that seed on first start
- All players connecting experience the same world
For community servers, choosing the seed in advance lets you plan spawn locations, base spots, and event areas before players join.
Sharing Seeds
The Valheim community shares recommended seeds online. When using a shared seed:
- Verify it was tested on your game version (updates can change generation)
- Screenshots from the sharer help confirm what you should expect
- The world modifier settings must also match if they shared with specific modifiers
FAQ
What is a Valheim world seed? A text string that determines the entire world layout. The same seed always generates the same world.
Can I change the seed of an existing world? No. The seed is fixed at creation. You would need to start a new world with the different seed.
Do world generators show everything? They show biome placement, coastlines, and major landmarks. Some details like dungeon placement within biomes are not always mapped.
