A friend sent you a play.hosting link, or you saw Tubbo talk about it, and before you build a world there you want three answers: is Play Hosting good, is it safe, and is it really free. We went through PlayHosting's own pages, its help center, its Trustpilot profile and the UK company register on 3 November 2026. The main site shows a browser check to automated visits, so for the homepage and the terms we read the copies the Internet Archive saved on 25 October and 28 September 2026. We have not run a server there or measured its speed, so everything below is what PlayHosting publishes, not what we tested.
Quick answer: Play Hosting is a good free option for a small group that can live with a queue and no uptime promise. Each free Minecraft server gets 3 GB of RAM and 10 GB of NVMe storage on shared Ryzen 9 7950X machines in Brighton, New York, Amsterdam or Los Angeles, with modpack installs, Bedrock crossplay and subusers included. On safety: it is run by Timbers Studio Ltd, a UK company that Companies House lists as active, and on 3 November 2026 it scored 4.5 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 144 reviews, 8% of them one-star. Its terms call free hosting "best effort" and say nothing about backups of free servers, so keep your own copy of the world. Pay for hosting when you need more than 3 GB, a region it does not offer, or a server that never waits in a queue.
Is Play Hosting good? What the free server includes
PlayHosting's homepage (as saved on 25 October 2026) lists what comes with every free server:

Read the hardware row as a description of the machine, not of your share. The hardware page in the help center says the 7950X means "we can run many servers on a single machine". Your server gets 3 GB of RAM, and the CPU is shared with the other servers on that node. "No slot limit" means nobody caps the player count; the 3 GB still decides how many players and mods your world can carry. A small vanilla or Paper server for friends fits. A big modpack may not, so check the RAM advice for the exact pack before you start.
On features, PlayHosting covers what most people compare free hosts on. Its crossplay guide installs crossplay together with Paper from the Software tab, and Bedrock players join on your .play.hosting address with port 19132. It works only on servers without mods, such as Paper. The voice chat guide installs Simple Voice Chat from the Plugins tab and says the panel handles the configuration.
The queue and the storage behind it
Free capacity is handed out through a queue. The queue page says it exists "to ensure there's a fair distribution of resources" and that getting a server "can take anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes, depending on how many people are in the queue."
Storage works in two layers. According to the hardware page, servers run on NVMe SSDs while in use, and "when not in use" they are stored on high-capacity HDDs in a separate NAS cluster. That is part of how one machine can serve so many free accounts. It also means a stopped server has to come back from that cluster before it runs again. The help center does not say how long that takes or after how much idle time a server is stopped.
For moving a world in, the upload guide has you zip a folder on your computer, upload it in the Files tab and unpack it there, or paste a direct download link for very large files. If your world is too big, it suggests MCA Selector to remove chunks nobody uses.
Is play.hosting free, and how is it free?
Yes. The Minecraft server costs nothing, and the homepage title reads "Minecraft Servers, 100% Free, Forever". PlayHosting does not publish how it pays for that, but its own pages show the pieces:
- Shared machines. Many servers per node, a queue at busy times, and HDD storage for servers that are off.
- Paid products next to the free one. VPS plans "start at £4/month", and dedicated servers are sold too, both in Brighton and New York.
- A partner. The homepage says "Partnered with" Lilypad, and the terms describe Lilypad Technologies Ltd as a "premium hosting partner".
- A founder with an audience. The homepage says "Built by Tubbo" and links a video on the Tubputers YouTube channel about how the free servers are hosted. It also says that since February 2025 "over a million servers have trusted Play Hosting".
"Upgrade at any time" is on the free server's feature list, but the saved homepage shows no price for a bigger Minecraft server.
Is play.hosting safe and legit?
Four things you can check yourself:
- Who runs it. The terms of service, last amended 21 August 2026, call Play Hosting "a trade name of Timbers Studio Ltd" and put the agreement under UK law. Companies House lists Timbers Studio Ltd, company number 12937325, as active, incorporated on 8 October 2020, with its latest confirmation statement dated 7 October 2026.
- Reviews. On Trustpilot, checked 3 November 2026, Play Hosting has 4.5 out of 5 from 144 reviews, 137 of them from the last 12 months. 75% are five-star and 8% one-star. Trustpilot adds that the company has not invited customers recently, "so reviews may not be representative", and that it replied to 80% of negative reviews, typically after more than a month.
- Age. The terms say users must be at least 18, or 13 to 17 with a parent's or guardian's consent.
- Your account. The terms make you responsible for your login. Use a password you use nowhere else.
Safe and legit does not mean your world is protected. The terms do not mention backups for free servers, so make your own copy of the world, especially before a long break. Mods and plugins you upload yourself are your own risk as well; download them from their official pages on Modrinth or CurseForge.
Is PlayHosting 24/7?
Not as a promise. The terms say "Free hosting is provided on a best-effort basis", and the free uptime target is written as a joke, with "a selfie of Tubbo smiling" as compensation when it is missed. Paid VPS and dedicated servers are different: their terms include an uptime guarantee with service credits when it is not met.
The help center does not say whether a free server stops when nobody is online. If you need it running while nobody plays, for example for a farm, ask in PlayHosting's Discord before you rely on it. If it has to run around the clock, plan on a paid server.
PlayHosting VPS and dedicated servers
The saved homepage lists VPS plans from £4 a month (as shown on 25 October 2026). You install your own operating system, and the servers run in Brighton, UK or New York, US, with what PlayHosting calls "best-in-class DDoS protection". The terms add the rules that come with root access: you must secure and patch the server yourself, and public VPNs, open proxies, Tor exit nodes, cryptocurrency mining and scanning other networks are not allowed. A VPS is not a managed Minecraft panel, so pick it only if you are happy to run the server software yourself.
When a paid Minecraft server makes more sense
Write down what your group needs first, then hold the free plan against that list. Paying makes sense when you hit one of these:
- Your modpack needs more than 3 GB of RAM.
- Most of your players live far from Brighton, New York, Amsterdam and Los Angeles.
- Your group cannot wait in a queue when it wants to play.
- You want support at set hours rather than asking in a Discord server.

Moving your world off PlayHosting
Before you switch, list what you need to take: all world folders, server.properties, the whitelist and operator lists, and your plugins or mods with their exact versions. Copy everything to your own computer first. Then run the same Minecraft version and loader on the new server, test with one or two players, and only send the new address to the whole group once that works.
