Java or Bedrock? A Minecraft Server for Indian Friend Groups

PC and phone friends in India on one Minecraft world: Java with Geyser or a Bedrock server, what phones can and cannot do, accounts and the Mumbai plans.

Your group wants one Minecraft world, and it is split: two friends play Java on laptops, five play on their phones, and one asks whether a PlayStation counts. In India, phones are where most people play; Niko Partners estimates that about 95% of gamers in India play on mobile devices. The server you pick decides who can join, which plugins and mods work and what everyone needs to sign in, and it is hard to change once the world has grown. For the SMP setup itself (whitelist, rules, restarts and backups in IST), see our SMP guide for India.

Quick answer: For a group that mixes PCs and phones, run a Java server (Paper) with Geyser and Floodgate. PC friends join with Java Edition, phone friends join from the Bedrock game they already have, signed in with their Microsoft account, and nobody buys a second copy. Phone players then play by Java's rules, a few things such as clickable chat links do not translate, and mods that every player must install, Cobblemon among them, lock phones out. Choose a Bedrock Dedicated Server only if everyone plays Bedrock, PC friends included, and add-ons matter more to you than plugins. For a friend group on Paper with Geyser, 4 or 5 GB of RAM is a sensible start.

Who Can Join Which Server

Minecraft on a phone or tablet is Bedrock Edition, which continued Pocket Edition in 2017; that is where the name MCPE comes from. On a PC, Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC includes both editions in one purchase, but Bedrock needs Windows: Mac and Linux run Java only. On their own the editions do not mix: the store page says Java Edition users "can only play with other Java users".

Consoles cannot type in a server address: the Minecraft Wiki says they "can only connect through a custom DNS or a LAN connection". Our console guide has the options.

Check the laptops too. The store page lists 8 GB of RAM with a discrete graphics card, or 12 GB with integrated graphics, as the minimum for Java Edition, plus a Vulkan 1.3 GPU with at least 2 GB of video memory. Bedrock on Windows lists 4 GB. A laptop with 8 GB and integrated graphics falls short on memory for Java but not for Bedrock, so that friend can play the Bedrock half of the PC purchase and join like the phone players.

Option 1: A Java Server With Geyser and Floodgate

Geyser is "a bridge between Minecraft: Bedrock Edition and Minecraft: Java Edition". It runs as a plugin on Paper and connects as a Java 26.3 client (an older server needs ViaVersion), so, as GeyserMC's FAQ puts it, "the server actually thinks you're joining from Java Edition". Floodgate lets Bedrock players join "without needing a paid Minecraft: Java Edition account". Geyser needs a port of its own, open for TCP and UDP, and since Bedrock 26.60 (27 October 2026) it must use NetherNet; our Geyser and Floodgate hosting guide covers that setup.

What works for phone players:

  • The same world, chat and plugins. The server sees a Java client, so land claims, homes and other server-side plugins treat phone players like anyone else. The FAQ lists a few exceptions, mostly plugins that change how players log in.
  • Java's rules. Redstone, "along with any other mechanics like commands, farms, etc., will work exactly like Java Edition", the FAQ says, so build farms from Java designs.
  • Their own skins, which Floodgate shows to Java players.
  • Bedrock menus and packs. Plugins can send Bedrock forms through Floodgate, and Bedrock resource packs go in Geyser's packs folder. Java resource packs are not converted automatically.

What does not work:

  • Mods that every player installs. GeyserMC says servers "that require mods to be installed clientside are unsupportable through Geyser". Modrinth lists Cobblemon as a client and server mod, so a Cobblemon world is for PC players only; our Cobblemon guide covers that setup.
  • Some chat and menu features. The limitations page lists clickable links in chat, anything that relies on tab completion or typing in the chat window, and telling left and right clicks apart in inventories. Share invite links in your group chat and test plugin menus on a phone.
  • Bedrock-only content. Marketplace add-ons and worlds are Bedrock features and do not come along to a Java server.
  • Phones that stopped updating. On 30 October 2026 Geyser supports Bedrock 26.40 to 26.60, and its supported versions page says: "Older Bedrock versions are not supported." A phone that no longer gets Minecraft updates stays on an old version and drops out once that version leaves the range. The Minecraft Wiki lists Android 9, or iOS and iPadOS 14, for the current release, so check older phones first.

Option 2: A Bedrock Dedicated Server

Mojang's Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS) is free server software for Windows and Ubuntu that every Bedrock device can join. Java players cannot: asked whether Geyser lets Java players onto a Bedrock server, GeyserMC answers that "it does not work the opposite way". A PC friend joins with Bedrock for Windows instead.

A BDS gives your group the Bedrock game your phone friends know, with add-ons: the server has folders for behavior packs and resource packs. Its default server.properties turns on the allow-list and the Xbox sign-in check, and notes that "Clients connecting to remote (non-LAN) servers will always require Xbox Live authentication regardless of this setting." The wiki also lists what BDS lacks: it has "poor support of community mods or plugins", with add-on scripting as the alternative, and it does not support SRV records, so players cannot join with a domain name alone.

Our India page describes the Java route: Paper, Purpur, Fabric, Forge and NeoForge install from the panel. If you want a pure Bedrock Dedicated Server in Mumbai, ask in live chat before you order; our team answers from 13:30 to 01:30 IST.

Accounts: What Each Friend Needs

  • Java players need a Microsoft account that owns Java Edition. Keep online-mode=true: Paper's documentation says it "makes it impossible for cracked players to connect", and GeyserMC calls running without authentication "unsupportable and dangerous as anyone can join your server". A friend on TLauncher needs a real copy (see our launcher comparison).
  • Phone players need Minecraft on the phone and a Microsoft account they are signed in with. Geyser turns away Bedrock players it cannot verify with Please log into Xbox to join this server. In game they get a dot before their name, Floodgate's default prefix, so a Java Rahul and a Bedrock Rahul do not clash. Whitelist them with fwhitelist add and their Gamertag, which GeyserMC says only works once the player has joined a Geyser server before.
  • Friends on a child account (the age limit depends on the country) need a parent to allow multiplayer. Minecraft's parental controls guide says how: at account.xbox.com/settings, pick the child's account, open Online Safety and set "You can join multiplayer games" to Allow. On Java, a blocked account sees Multiplayer is disabled. Please check your Microsoft account settings.
  • A friend on both phone and PC can link the two accounts once with GeyserMC's Global Linking, which Floodgate 2.0 turns on by default: join link.geysermc.org with both accounts and follow the /linkaccount steps. Both devices then use the Java account's "location, inventory data, and achievements", and the Bedrock account's own progress stays out of reach until they unlink, so move items to the Java side first.

Already Have a World on Someone's Phone?

In Bedrock, the edit world screen can export the world as a .mcworld file, and Chunker, which runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, converts it into a Java world you upload to the server. Chunker is open source and maintained by Hive Games with funding from Mojang Studios, though Microsoft's Chunker overview stresses that it "is not a Mojang/Microsoft offering". Its README lists Bedrock up to 1.26.60 and Java up to 26.3.

It converts level settings, blocks, biomes, dimensions, containers with their items, and maps. It does not convert entities or player inventories, so have everyone put their gear in chests before the export, and expect pets and villagers to stay behind. Chunker also converts Java worlds to Bedrock.

Which One Fits

  • PCs and phones, plugins wanted: a Java server with Geyser and Floodgate.
  • Everyone on Bedrock: a Bedrock Dedicated Server keeps Bedrock's rules and add-ons. A Java server with Geyser also works if you want plugins such as land claims, and keeps the door open for a Java friend later.
  • Everyone on Java: plain Paper. Geyser is a plugin, so you can add it the day a phone player joins.
  • A modpack such as Cobblemon: Java only; phone friends cannot join.

Which Plan in Mumbai

Our India plans run on our own node in Mumbai: a Ryzen 9 3900X-class CPU shared with other servers on the machine, DDR4 memory, NVMe storage and DDoS protection at the standard level. As of 30 October 2026 they cost €2.70 a month for MC Coal (3 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe), €3.60 for MC Iron (4 GB, 50 GB), €4.50 for MC Gold (5 GB, 60 GB), €5.40 for MC Lapis (6 GB, 70 GB) and €7.20 for MC Diamond (8 GB, 80 GB). You pay in euros: at the ECB reference rate of 29 October 2026 (€1 = ₹106.03), €3.60 is about ₹382 and €4.50 about ₹477, and your bank converts at its own rate on the day you pay. Every plan includes three port allocations at no cost, enough for Java, Geyser and voice chat.

GeyserMC publishes no memory figure for Geyser, so size the server for everyone who plays, phones included; our RAM calculator does that. As a start: Coal for vanilla Paper and a few friends, Iron or Gold once plugins come in, and Lapis or Diamond for a bigger group. You can upgrade from the client area later and keep the world. We do not quote a ping for Mumbai: once the server runs, its entry in the server list shows each player's ping on their own connection.

FAQ

Phone players cannot join since a Minecraft update. What happened? Bedrock updates itself, and Geyser has to support the new version first. If Geyser is behind, the phone shows a message that starts with Outdated Geyser proxy and lists the Bedrock versions the server supports: update Geyser and restart. If it starts with Outdated Bedrock client, the phone is behind, and the player updates the game.

Is a Realm easier for a mixed group? A Realm is a server Mojang runs for you and up to 10 friends at a time, but the editions still do not cross-play: a Java Realm keeps phones out and a Bedrock Realm keeps Java out. It suits a mixed group only if the PC friends play Bedrock.

Should Geyser run as a plugin or on its own? As a plugin on Paper. GeyserMC calls plugin versions "preferable compared to standalone Geyser", with "faster loading times, lower latency, and accurate IP addresses", and lower memory use on Paper. Large networks might prefer standalone, GeyserMC adds.

How do I type a Bedrock player's name in a command? With the dot prefix and with underscores for spaces, since Floodgate replaces spaces in Bedrock names. If that fails, GeyserMC suggests double quotes: /tp ".Priya_Plays".
