FiveM 'Your Account Is Already Being Used': How to Fix It

Published on

FiveM says your account is already being used to play on FiveM or RedM? What it means, the fixes in order, which ones Cfx.re backs and when to open a ticket.

You click Connect and FiveM stops you with this message, plus an Error ID that starts with au_:

Your account is already being used to play on FiveM or RedM. Please end your current session first, and try to connect again.

Sometimes the cause is obvious, like a friend on your login. Often it is not: you play alone, you restarted everything, and every server shows it. Below are the fixes, quickest first, marked by whether they come from Cfx.re or from other players.

Quick answer: FiveM says your account is already being used when Cfx.re sees it in another FiveM or RedM session, and it allows one at a time. Close FiveM and RedM on every PC where your account could be signed in, including a friend's, end leftover FiveM and RedM processes or restart your PC, and reconnect. If the error survives a restart while nobody else plays, sign out of Cfx.re in the client and back in, then try renaming ros_id.dat and the DigitalEntitlements folder, a community fix that Cfx.re documents only for another problem. If every server still refuses you, open a Cfx.re support ticket with your Error ID.

Why FiveM Says Your Account Is Already Being Used

The message itself is the only official explanation. Cfx.re's Client Issues page does not list it, and none of the 121 English articles in its help centre mentioned it on 31 October 2026. Three parts of the text matter:

  • "Your account". Cfx.re's Account Security Update FAQ says servers recognize your Rockstar Games account through your license and license2 identifiers. A forum regular puts the rule as one license, used once at a time.
  • "FiveM or RedM". The check spans both platforms, so it runs at Cfx.re and not on the server you picked. That is why every server shows it.
  • "Please end your current session first". This is Cfx.re's own fix.

So either a second session really exists, or none does and the check fails anyway. The second kind fills the FiveM Client Support forum: in six threads opened in October 2026, players had restarted their PC, switched Rockstar accounts or deleted files without result. On 31 October none had a reply from Cfx.re staff; the only replies were the forum's automatic notice that most support there "is provided by the Cfx.re community on a voluntary basis".

GitHub issue #4207 reports the same error on every server "for almost two months", open with the labels bug and triage since 17 September 2026. A commenter with no role in the citizenfx project suggests "a stale session lock on the backend/auth servers" that only staff with backend access can clear. That is a guess, not Cfx.re's word, but it fits the threads.

The Fixes in Order, and Who Recommends Them

StepWhat it deals withWho says so
1. End the other sessionA second PC, a shared login, a test clientCfx.re, in the error text
2. Close leftover processes or restartA session your own PC still holdsWindows basics; Cfx.re says the same for another FiveM error
3. Sign out of Cfx.re and back inThe client's link to your Cfx.re accountSteps from Cfx.re's help centre, not documented as a fix for this error
4. Rename ros_id.dat and DigitalEntitlementsLocal data on your PCCfx.re docs for a different problem; a community fix for this one
5. Support ticket with the Error IDA session stuck at Cfx.reCfx.re's support channel

Step 1: End the Other Session

Check every place your account could be in a FiveM or RedM session right now: a second PC or a laptop, a friend or family member who uses your Rockstar login, or a second client you opened for testing. RedM counts too. Close the game there, wait until it has fully exited, and reconnect.

Sharing one license no longer works. In an April 2025 forum thread, players reported that sharing one license or one FiveM account across two PCs stopped working from one day to the next, and a forum regular answered that two clients at the same time need two licenses.

If nobody you know could be on your account, treat it as a security problem too. Cfx.re's Important Account Security Update from June 2026 targets compromised or stolen Rockstar Games accounts and recommends 2-Step Verification on your Rockstar account. Change your Rockstar password and turn it on.

Step 2: Close Leftover FiveM and RedM Processes, or Restart

A game that crashed can leave processes running. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, go to the Details tab, click Name to sort, and end every process whose name starts with FiveM or RedM. Cfx.re's Client Issues page gives the same advice for another FiveM error: "check your Task Manager for existing FiveM related processes".

To check from Command Prompt (these only list, they change nothing):

tasklist /fi "IMAGENAME eq FiveM*"
tasklist /fi "IMAGENAME eq RedM*"

INFO: No tasks are running which match the specified criteria. means nothing is left.

After a crash, give it a few minutes before you reconnect. Cfx.re publishes no time for this, so treat the wait as a quick test, not a rule. A full restart of your PC ends every local process. If the error survives one, your PC is not holding the session: look again at step 1, or the session sits at Cfx.re.

Step 3: Sign Out of Your Cfx.re Account and Back In

For FiveM for GTAV Enhanced, Cfx.re's help centre gives the steps: select the Settings icon in the upper right, then Account, and select Sign Out next to your connected Cfx.re username. To sign back in, select Link Account in the upper right, then Sign In With Cfx.re, and log in through the browser window that opens. For the Legacy client, Cfx.re documents only the sign-in: Link account sits at the top of the window and behind the gear icon in settings. Our Legacy or Enhanced guide shows which client you have.

Do it once and move on. Don't create new Cfx.re or Rockstar accounts to get around the error: the players who tried, including the GitHub reporter, still got it, and many servers tie characters to your Rockstar account's license identifier, so a new Rockstar account starts you from zero there.

Step 4: Rename ros_id.dat and DigitalEntitlements

Many players try this fix. Cfx.re's Client Issues page says to delete %appdata%\citizenfx\ros_id.dat and %localappdata%\digitalentitlements when FiveM is stuck on a rotating splash screen: a documented step, but for a different problem. For this error it is a community fix, and four of the six October threads had tried it without result. Rename instead of delete, so you can undo it.

Close FiveM, RedM and, if it runs, the Rockstar Games Launcher. Then run this in Command Prompt:

ren "%appdata%\CitizenFX\ros_id.dat" ros_id.dat.bak
ren "%localappdata%\DigitalEntitlements" DigitalEntitlements.bak

Microsoft's ren reference covers files and folders alike. If one is not found, it does not exist on your PC; skip it. The new name must be unique, so delete any .bak from an earlier attempt first. Start FiveM, sign in if asked, and reconnect. To undo, delete the newly created ros_id.dat and DigitalEntitlements and rename the .bak copies back.

Clearing the FiveM cache, as in our cache guide, is a different fix: it removes downloaded server files, not account data.

Step 5: Open a Cfx.re Support Ticket With Your Error ID

If the error survives a restart, a sign-out and step 4 while nobody else uses your account, only Cfx.re can look at the session. Use the support ticket form that Cfx.re's docs link to, and include:

  • The full message and the Error ID.
  • The date and time you saw it, with your time zone.
  • Your client (Legacy or Enhanced) and where your GTA V comes from: Steam, Epic Games or Rockstar.
  • Whether anyone else plays from your home or PC, and what you tried.

A forum post reaches volunteers, as the automatic notice says, and a volunteer cannot see your account's sessions.

If It Happens When Your Friend Joins a Server

Two of the October threads describe a pattern the steps above do not explain. In one, two PCs in the same house have separate Steam, Rockstar, Cfx.re and Discord accounts and two separately bought copies of GTA V. Whenever one player joins a server, the other gets the error, and the linked identities under Settings, Account switch between the two PCs. In the other, a sister's Discord account showed up among a player's linked identifiers. Neither had a Cfx.re answer on 31 October.

If that sounds like your home, open Settings, Account on each PC and look for identities that are not yours. Send screenshots and both players' Error IDs in one ticket.

Running Two Clients for Testing

The developer version: you connect a PC and a laptop to your own server with one account, and the second one is refused. That is the rule from step 1.

For a second client on the same PC, Cfx.re's Running two FiveM clients page documents two methods:

  • Legacy client: create a second shortcut to FiveM.exe and add -cl2 after the closing quote in its Target field, for example "C:\Users\<YourUsername>\AppData\Local\FiveM\FiveM.exe" -cl2. Start the normal shortcut first, wait until it has fully loaded, then start the second one.
  • FiveM for GTAV Enhanced: add sv_devMode true to your development server's server.cfg and restart the server. Connect, press F8 to open the devtools, hover over Debug and click Launch Additional Client.

Cfx.re's shortcut page notes that -cl2 "will not create a different identifier". The docs do not say whether a second client on one license passes the account check, and forum members disagree, so test it on your own server first.

For Server Owners

When a player sends you this error, your server is not the cause: the check covers FiveM and RedM together and runs at Cfx.re, and most players in these threads see it on every server they try. Nothing in server.cfg, txAdmin or your resources can end a Cfx.re session, so point the player to step 5. That holds on Space-Node's FiveM hosting too: the plans come with a control panel, txAdmin and DDoS protection already set up, but a player's Cfx.re session is outside any host's reach.

A player who can join but finds their character gone has a different problem. If the June 2026 Account Security Update changed their license or license2 identifier, Cfx.re's restore article has the fix: in the client settings, under Default Identity, choose Change Default, pick another linked identity, set it as default, restart the client and reconnect. Players can do that until 24 June 2027; after that, server staff have to migrate characters.

FAQ

Why does FiveM say my account is already being used when nobody else is playing? Either your PC still holds a session after a crash, which step 2 fixes, or the session is stuck at Cfx.re. If the error survives a restart and a sign-out, it is the second kind: open a ticket.

Can two people use one Rockstar account on FiveM at the same time? No. The check allows one FiveM or RedM session per account, and forum reports date the end of shared licenses across PCs to April 2025. Each player needs their own GTA V license.

Does deleting ros_id.dat fix the account already in use error? Worth one try, but not an official fix. Cfx.re documents it for a client stuck on its splash screen, and four of the six October 2026 threads had tried it without result. Rename the files instead of deleting them.

How long does the "account already being used" error last? Cfx.re publishes no time limit. After a crash, wait a few minutes. If the error survives a full restart, don't wait it out: the GitHub reporter had it for almost two months.

Will I lose my characters if I switch Rockstar accounts? On many servers, yes, because servers recognize you by your Rockstar Games account's license identifiers, and many tie characters to them.

Can I run two FiveM clients on one PC for testing? Cfx.re documents -cl2 for Legacy and Launch Additional Client for Enhanced. Whether the second client passes the account check on one license is not documented.
