Threads keep side conversations out of your main channels. On busy Discord servers, good thread management prevents clutter and keeps discussions easy to follow.
Types of Threads
- Public threads: Visible to everyone with access to the parent channel
- Private threads: Only invited members and moderators can see them
- Forum post threads: Each post in a forum channel is its own thread
Creating Threads
- Hover a message and select Create Thread, or
- Use the + menu in a channel to start a thread without a parent message
Auto-Archive Settings
Threads automatically archive after a period of inactivity:
| Setting | Archives After |
|---|---|
| 1 hour | 1 hour of inactivity |
| 24 hours | 1 day of inactivity |
| 3 days | 3 days of inactivity |
| 1 week | 7 days of inactivity |
Archived threads are not deleted. They move out of the active list and reopen when someone posts.
Managing Active Threads
- Pin important threads so they stay visible
- Use slowmode in busy threads to reduce spam
- Lock threads when a discussion is resolved (moderators only)
- Remove or add members to private threads as needed
Bot Automation
Moderation bots can automate thread management:
- Auto-create threads for specific keywords or channels
- Auto-archive or delete inactive threads
- Auto-add roles or members to new threads
- Notify moderators when threads need attention
Carl-bot, YAGPDB, and similar bots support thread automation.
Best Practices
- Use threads for support questions so the main channel stays clean
- Set shorter auto-archive on high-traffic channels
- Lock resolved threads to prevent necro-posting
- Combine threads with forum channels for structured discussions
