Best Armor Enchantments in Minecraft: Helmet to Boots (26.3)

The best enchantments for each armor piece in Minecraft 26.3, Protection versus Blast or Fire Protection, god armor commands and the cheapest anvil order.

The Ender Dragon from Minecraft with its wings spread

You have diamond or netherite armor, a pile of enchanted books and only so many levels. Which enchantments go on which piece, is Protection better than Blast Protection, and in what order do the books go on before the anvil says "Too Expensive"? This guide covers Java Edition 26.3, the current release since 15 September 2026, plus the Bedrock differences. Java's 2026 updates, 26.1 to 26.3, did not change how these enchantments protect you.

Quick answer: The best enchantments for armor are Protection IV, Unbreaking III and Mending on all four pieces, plus Respiration III and Aqua Affinity on the helmet, Swift Sneak III on the leggings, and Feather Falling IV, Depth Strider III and Soul Speed III on the boots. Thorns III is optional. That full set is what players call god armor. Four Protection IV pieces cut the damage that gets past your armor by 64% against almost every source, while Blast, Fire and Projectile Protection only cover their own damage type. Merge books in pairs before they go onto the armor, and no anvil step comes near the 40-level limit.

The Best Enchantments for Armor, Piece by Piece

LeggingsProtection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending, Swift Sneak IIIThorns III
BootsProtection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending, Feather Falling IV, Depth Strider III, Soul Speed IIIFrost Walker II instead of Depth Strider, Thorns III

Every piece shares three base enchantments:

  • Protection IV cuts damage by 4% per level, so 16% per piece and 64% for four. It works on top of armor points and also cuts damage armor ignores, such as falls and harmful effects. Only hunger, the void, /kill and the warden's sonic boom get past it.
  • Unbreaking III gives each durability hit on armor a 30% chance to be ignored. Armor lasts about 1.43 times as long; tools last four times as long.
  • Mending repairs 2 durability per experience point, before the XP reaches your level bar. With several damaged Mending items, each orb picks one at random. It works with Unbreaking; its only conflict is Infinity on bows.

Keep Curse of Binding and Curse of Vanishing off. Binding locks a piece on you until you die or it breaks, Vanishing deletes the item when you die (not while keep inventory is on), and a grindstone removes neither curse.

Best Helmet Enchantments

Respiration III stretches your air from 16 seconds to about 64 on average. Aqua Affinity removes the five times slower mining you get with your head underwater. It does not fix the separate penalty for mining while you float, so stand on the bottom when you dig.

Chestplate: Protection, and Thorns If You Want It

The chestplate has no enchantment of its own, so the three base ones complete it. Thorns III is the usual extra: each Thorns III piece has a 45% chance to hit an attacker for 1 to 5 damage, melee or ranged. Extra pieces raise the chance but never push one hit above 5 damage. Each trigger costs the piece 2 extra durability, which Mending pays back. In Java the enchanting table offers Thorns only on chestplates and books, Bedrock's table on every piece, and Thorns III never comes from the table.

An elytra in the chestplate slot cannot take Protection in survival, so while you wear one your set drops from 64% to 48%.

Leggings: Swift Sneak

Swift Sneak III lets you sneak at 75% of your walking speed instead of 30%, and you crawl faster too. It only comes from ancient city chests: no librarian sells it and no enchanting table offers it.

Boots: Feather Falling, Depth Strider and Soul Speed

  • Feather Falling IV reduces fall and ender pearl damage by 48%. Armor points do nothing against falls, so the enchantments do all the work. With Feather Falling IV and at least two Protection IV pieces you reach the 80% cap, and a fall of 23 blocks drops from 20 damage (10 hearts) to 4.
  • Depth Strider III lets you swim as fast as you walk.
  • Frost Walker II is the alternative; the two cannot go on the same boots. It freezes water under your feet and blocks damage from magma blocks, campfires and the hot sulfur cubes added in 26.2, but not from lava.
  • Soul Speed III makes you 61.5% faster on soul sand and soul soil, and slowly wears the boots down. It only comes from bastion remnant chests and piglin bartering, at a random level.

Protection or Blast, Fire and Projectile Protection?

Only one of the four protections fits on a piece. The game counts them in Enchantment Protection Factor (EPF) points: 1 per level of Protection against nearly everything, 2 per level of a special protection against its own damage type, and 3 per level of Feather Falling against falls. Your total is capped at 20 and each point removes 4% of the damage, so 80% is the maximum.

Your four piecesMost damageExplosionsFire and lavaProjectiles
Four Protection IV64%64%64%64%

Three Protection IV, one Fire Protection IV48%48%80%48%
Three Protection IV, one Projectile Protection IV48%48%48%80%

The percentages apply to the damage your armor points let through. A swap gains 16 percentage points against one type and loses 16 against everything else, so four Protection IV pieces are the everyday set. Swap one piece for a planned job: Blast Protection for creepers, TNT, end crystals and the Wither (in Java it also cuts explosion knockback by 15% per level), Fire Protection for lava work (each level also shortens burning by 15%), and Projectile Protection for arrows, tridents and blaze fireballs. For the Ender Dragon keep Protection, because dragon fireballs do not count as projectile damage. Falls stay at the 80% cap in every row thanks to Feather Falling IV.

Librarians sell books at any level up to the maximum, for at most 64 emeralds, and charge double for treasure books such as Mending. Curing a zombie villager gives a big discount the first time; see our guide to villager prices. With the Villager Trade Rebalance experiment on, books depend on the librarian's biome, and Mending comes only from a master swamp librarian.

At the enchanting table, use 15 bookshelves. Feather Falling IV is rare there (2.7% on diamond boots at level 30, per the wiki), so buy that book. Upgrading enchanted diamond armor to netherite at a smithing table keeps the enchantments, costs no XP and adds no prior work penalty.

Anvil Order: How to Avoid Too Expensive

Every anvil use raises an item's prior work penalty: 0, 1, 3, 7, 15, then 31 levels. A step costs both items' penalties plus the value of the enchantments on the right-hand item, and Survival refuses any step of 40 levels or more as "Too Expensive". So merge books in pairs before they meet the armor, and put the more valuable item on the left, because you pay for what sits on the right.

Book values (the wiki's book multiplier times the level): Soul Speed III, Swift Sneak III and Thorns III 12, Respiration III and Depth Strider III 6, Protection IV, Feather Falling IV and Frost Walker II 4, Unbreaking III 3, Mending and Aqua Affinity 2. The orders below are calculated with the wiki's Java formulas for fresh books and a new piece. The item named first goes in the left slot.

Helmet, 27 levels

  1. Helmet + Protection IV: 4 levels
  2. Unbreaking III + Mending: 2 levels
  3. Respiration III + Aqua Affinity: 2 levels
  4. Helmet + the book from step 2: 7 levels
  5. Helmet + the book from step 3: 12 levels

Chestplate, 13 levels

  1. Chestplate + Protection IV: 4 levels
  2. Unbreaking III + Mending: 2 levels
  3. Chestplate + the book from step 2: 7 levels

Leggings, 28 levels

  1. Leggings + Protection IV: 4 levels
  2. Leggings + Unbreaking III: 4 levels
  3. Swift Sneak III + Mending: 2 levels
  4. Leggings + the book from step 3: 18 levels

Boots, 49 levels

  1. Boots + Protection IV: 4 levels
  2. Depth Strider III + Unbreaking III: 3 levels
  3. Soul Speed III + Feather Falling IV: 4 levels
  4. The book from step 3 + Mending: 3 levels
  5. Boots + the book from step 2: 11 levels
  6. Boots + the book from step 4: 24 levels

The whole set costs 117 levels. Adding the six boot books one at a time costs at least 88, and with Thorns as a seventh book every one-at-a-time order hits the limit. Thorns III on the chestplate raises its cost from 13 to 28 levels. If the enchanting table already gave a piece some of these enchantments, skip those books: the table adds no prior work penalty, so the remaining steps cost the same or less. A grindstone resets the penalty but strips every enchantment except curses. Bedrock uses the same prior work penalty, so the pairing works there too.

God Armor Commands for Java and Bedrock

In Java, /give with the enchantments component creates finished pieces. It needs operator rights, permission level 2 (see our OP commands guide):

/give @s netherite_helmet[enchantments={protection:4,unbreaking:3,mending:1,respiration:3,aqua_affinity:1}]
/give @s netherite_chestplate[enchantments={protection:4,unbreaking:3,mending:1}]
/give @s netherite_leggings[enchantments={protection:4,unbreaking:3,mending:1,swift_sneak:3}]
/give @s netherite_boots[enchantments={protection:4,unbreaking:3,mending:1,feather_falling:4,depth_strider:3,soul_speed:3}]

Add thorns:3 inside the braces for Thorns, or hand out books with /give @s enchanted_book[stored_enchantments={mending:1}]. Commands from guides for 1.21.4 and older fail on 26.3: since 1.21.5, enchantments={levels:{protection:4}} is written enchantments={protection:4}. To enchant the item in your hand, /enchant @s protection 4 works too, with the anvil's level limits and conflicts. The matching god sword command is in our sword enchantments guide.

In a server console, drop the slash and use the player's name instead of @s. On a Space-Node Minecraft server every plan runs on the Pterodactyl panel, whose live console takes these commands directly, so you can hand out a kit without joining the game.

Bedrock's /give cannot add enchantments. With cheats on, hold the piece in your main hand and run /enchant once per enchantment:

/enchant @s protection 4
/enchant @s unbreaking 3
/enchant @s mending
/enchant @s respiration 3
/enchant @s aqua_affinity

Use swift_sneak 3 for the leggings and feather_falling 4, depth_strider 3 and soul_speed 3 for the boots. Bedrock refuses levels above the maximum and conflicting enchantments.

Java's /give also accepts levels up to 255 and conflicting enchantments, but the caps hold: Protection V on all four pieces already hits the 20 EPF cap, Depth Strider stops helping above III, Feather Falling above VII and Swift Sneak above V. For an event kit that never wears out, use unbreakable={} instead of Unbreaking and Mending:

/give @s netherite_chestplate[unbreakable={},enchantments={protection:4}]

FAQ

What are the best enchantments for armor in Minecraft? Protection IV, Unbreaking III and Mending on every piece, Respiration III and Aqua Affinity on the helmet, Swift Sneak III on the leggings, and Feather Falling IV, Depth Strider III and Soul Speed III on the boots.

What are the best helmet enchantments in Minecraft? Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending, Respiration III and Aqua Affinity, with Thorns III as an option.

What is god armor in Minecraft? A netherite set with the best survival enchantments on every piece, as in the first table. An operator on a server can create it with the /give commands above.

Is Thorns worth it on armor? It is a trade: a 45% chance per piece to deal 1 to 5 damage to an attacker, against 2 extra durability per trigger and a more expensive anvil. With Mending, the durability comes back.

Can you put Protection and Blast Protection on the same armor? Not in survival. In an anvil the piece keeps its own protection and the book's conflicting one is lost. /give can combine them, but the total still stops at the 80% cap.

Why does my anvil say Too Expensive? One step costs 40 levels or more. The prior work penalty roughly doubles with every anvil use, so merge books in pairs first. A grindstone resets the penalty but removes the enchantments too.
