Stardew Valley Multiplayer Hosting 2026: Dedicated Server and Farm Setup

Stardew Valley is one of the most beloved games ever made. The multiplayer mode, added in 2018, lets up to 4 players share a farm together. But the native multiplayer requires one player to always be the host — their game must be running for others to join. In 2026, there are established solutions for running Stardew Valley on a dedicated server so your farm is always available.
How Stardew Valley Multiplayer Works Natively
In the official multiplayer:
- One player hosts using their save file
- Up to 3 others join as farmhands
- The farm only runs when the host is online
- All players share the same farm year and season
This works fine for groups that always play together. The limitation hits when players have different schedules — one player cannot hop into the farm unless the host is available.
Dedicated Stardew Valley Server via SMAPI
SMAPI (Stardew Modding API) enables dedicated server functionality through community mods. The most popular solution is the Always Online Mod or similar headless server mods that allow a Linux server to run Stardew Valley without a GUI.
Requirements
Stardew Valley is not natively a dedicated server game, so this approach requires:
- A VPS or game server with enough RAM (2-4 GB is sufficient)
- A copy of Stardew Valley (each player needs their own)
- SMAPI installed
- A headless server mod
- Some Linux familiarity for setup
Basic Setup
# Install Stardew Valley via Steam (works headlessly on Linux)
steamcmd +login <account> +app_update 413150 validate +quit
# Install SMAPI
wget https://github.com/Pathoschild/SMAPI/releases/latest
# Extract and run SMAPI installer
# Install Always Online server mod
# Copy mod to StardewValley/Mods/
Hardware Requirements
Stardew Valley is extremely light on resources:
- RAM: 2-3 GB total
- CPU: anything modern
- Storage: 1-2 GB for game files
This makes it one of the cheapest games to host on a dedicated server.
SMAPI Mods Worth Running
The SMAPI mod ecosystem has thousands of mods. For multiplayer servers, quality-of-life improvements that affect everyone are the best choice:
- CJB Cheats Menu — admin control panel for the host
- Automate — connects machines and chests, reduces tedious manual work
- UI Info Suite — better information display
- NPC Map Locations — shows villager positions on the map
Note that all players generally need client-side mods too unless the mod is server-only.
A Simpler Alternative: Self-Hosting Together
If the dedicated server setup feels too complex, there is a simpler approach: use a residential VPS or a friend's always-on computer as the designated host machine. The "host" player account does not need to be actively playing — just running Stardew and hosting the session. The cheaper option for casual groups.
