Not all Rust servers are the same. The server type you choose shapes everything from your player base to your hardware requirements. Here's a breakdown of each major type.
Vanilla
What it is: Unmodified Rust. Default gather rates, crafting speeds, and game mechanics. No Oxide plugins (or minimal quality-of-life plugins).
Player base: Hardcore Rust players who want the "intended" experience. Competitive, dedicated.
Hosting requirements: Moderate. No plugin overhead, but player expectations for tick rate are highest here - vanilla players notice lag immediately.
- Recommended: 8-16GB RAM
- Space-Node plan: Metal (€15.80) or Sulfur (€20.50)
Wipe schedule: Biweekly or monthly. Forced wipes only for hardcore vanilla.
2x Modded
What it is: Double gather rates, faster smelting, slightly accelerated progression. The most popular modded variant.
Player base: Players who enjoy Rust's core gameplay but don't have time for vanilla grind. Largest potential audience.
Hosting requirements: Slightly higher than vanilla. Oxide + plugins add overhead. Players tend to build bigger bases (more resources = more building).
- Recommended: 12-20GB RAM
- Space-Node plan: Sulfur (€20.50) or Fuel (€24.80)
Popular plugins: GatherManager (2x), QuickSmelt, NTeleportation, Kits, RemoverTool, Clans
5x-10x Modded
What it is: Heavily accelerated rates. Resources flow fast, bases go up quickly, raiding happens rapidly. Some servers add custom items and systems.
Player base: PvP-focused players who want constant action. Less building, more fighting.
Hosting requirements: Higher. Fast gather means more entities faster. Custom plugins are often poorly optimized.
- Recommended: 16-24GB RAM
- Space-Node plan: Fuel (€24.80) or Building Plan (€30.90)
Wipe schedule: Weekly. Fast progression means the server reaches "endgame" quickly.
Creative / Build
What it is: Infinite resources, no decay, no PvP. Focus entirely on base building and designing.
Player base: Builders, YouTubers planning base designs, players testing electrical circuits.
Hosting requirements: Moderate CPU, but entity count grows rapidly without decay. Regular entity cleanup needed.
- Recommended: 8-16GB RAM
- Space-Node plan: Metal (€15.80) or Sulfur (€20.50)
Configuration:
pve true
decay.scale 0
gather.rate 100
craft.instant true
PvE
What it is: Player vs Environment. No raiding, no PvP. Focus on base building, exploring, running monuments, and social gameplay.
Player base: Casual players, older gamers, players who enjoy Rust's world but not the toxicity.
Hosting requirements: Lower combat load but potentially higher entity count (no raiding keeps bases intact). Decay must be active or entities grow unbounded.
- Recommended: 12-20GB RAM
- Space-Node plan: Sulfur (€20.50) or Fuel (€24.80)
Popular PvE plugins: Raidable Bases (NPC bases to raid), ZombieHorde, BotSpawn, Convoy, custom NPC events
Roleplay
What it is: Custom rules, character-driven gameplay, economy systems, jobs, territories. More structured than standard PvE.
Player base: Creative players, former Minecraft/FiveM RPers, players who enjoy emergent stories.
Hosting requirements: Plugin-heavy. Economy systems, custom items, NPC systems, and territory management all add overhead.
- Recommended: 16-24GB RAM
- Space-Node plan: Fuel (€24.80) or Building Plan (€30.90)
Key plugins: Economics, ServerRewards, Kits, CustomVending, NPC shops
Choosing Your Type
Start by asking: who are my target players?
- Competitive PvP players → Vanilla or 2x
- Casual gamers → PvE
- Builder community → Creative
- Action-focused → 5x-10x
- Story-driven → Roleplay
Each type attracts a different community with different expectations and different hosting demands. Match your hardware to your server type, and your server type to your community's preferences.
